Obituary of Phillip Joseph Payne
Phillip J. Payne was born October 1, 1934, to the late Clara T. Payne and George Payne, in Baltimore, Maryland.
At age 22, he met and fell in love with Adell F. Jones. They joined in holy matrimony on July 31, 1957, and would remain together for 49 years and 7 months, before the passing of his wife in 2007.
Shortly, after graduating from Baltimore city public schools Phillip enlisted in the United States Army in November of 1951 at Fort Meade, Maryland, and departed for basic training. For 20-years, he served his country at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, Fort Knox, Kentucky, various bases in Germany, and he retired as a Staff Sergeant E-6 at Fort Eustis, Virginia in January 1972
Phillip and Adell enjoyed raising their three children. Phillip will be lovingly remembered and cherished by his one daughter Debra and his two sons Alvin and Rodney, two daughters in-laws; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, the Williams, and Tunstall family, and an extended network of former co-workers and friends.
After military service Phillip went to work Security for the Baltimore Museum of Art for 29 years before retiring in 2001
Phillip was known for being a Baltimore Colts and then Baltimore Ravens fan as well as an occasional Baltimore Orioles fan. He loved football and boxing and was a huge Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson fan. He enjoyed art and had a talent for drawing and painting. He appreciated all genres of music, and enjoyed spending time with his friends at "THE PUB".
He was called by God and his soul returned to the Almighty on February 5, 2022, at the age of 87.
Viewing hours will take place on March 4, 2022 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Services, 5151 Baltimore National Pike, Baltimore, MD.
The funeral will take place on March 5, 2022 where the family will receive friends from 10:00 - 10:30 am with services to follow.
The interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Gwynn Oak, MD following services.
