I just learned of Demetria's passing. We attended the same high school and I remember her as a kind and smart young lady. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends. Rest peacefully Demetria.

To the Newsome Family:
My heart is saddened when I found out the Demetria transitioned. I remember when we first met at Mr. and Mrs. Russell's house during my Junior year in high school during wrestling session. While in High School we continued to keep in touch. I remember when her cousin introduced us and we became real good friends. I remember the letter writing and Mrs. Newsome would come over to our home and visit with my parents when you all came in town. For the most part Demetria was a very nice and sweet person. Even though I went to WSSU and she went to MSU we still kept in touch with one another. I miss the discussions we used to have. You always had a special place in my heart. We will continue to keep you and the rest of the family in our prayers.
Rodney Rivers and Family.

She believed in me when I gave up on myself. I will always love you Dr.Newsome. You treated me like I was your child, I was just sitting here thinking about you and all the great things you've done for me. I'll always appreciate you.

My deepest sympathy to the Newsome family. She was my science teacher at Dunbar in the late 90's. I saw her at a city schools career transfer fair just last spring and she remembered me and offered to help me find what I was looking for. I'm a city schools teacher now due to the example of teachers like herself. In my memory her kindness sticks out. It was a privilege learning from Ms. Newsome.

Sit down and let me tell you some stories of how I knew Demetria Lynn Newsome. Demetria and I met at Morgan State. She actually used to visit me in the dorm and watch me do my homework for hours on end. Yes, that actually happened. She confirmed it in 2019!! LOL. She was such an old soul, way beyond her years. That she went on to be a founding member of Alpha Nu Omega fit right in with her persona and destiny.
Demetria always made it a point to find me at homecoming on Morgan State's Yard after the Greek stepping was completed. October 2019 was no different. She would make a beeline from the Delta circle to the Kappa circle and find me in the crowd. This time I asked her, "How do you always manage to find me in this big crowd? And why??" It's so hard finding people I had to know how she did it so consistently. She would always say something to the effect that "I figured you'd just be here." We spoke for 20 minutes as we always do and parted ways as my feet started hurting from a long day. Who could have imagined that would have been the last time I would see her? Luckily we spoke by phone and texted several times but still, who knew???
Every once in awhile she would call or text me using my whole entire name: "Greetings, EDB, Jr.!!" or "Hello, Mr. Morgan." She was always more impressed with me than I was with myself. She also never forgot the small town I was from in SC and that I ran the family business (funeral home/cemetery). Even after 30 plus years of knowing her, she remembered that. "So how are things going in little ole' South Carolina? Are people still dying?" That was big because most of my big city classmates at Morgan made fun of the fact I was from a small rural southern town. She was always respectful about that and even knew it is the hometown of jazz great Dizzy Gillespie.
In this last year we spoke of old photographs a lot. She helped me decide which Mr. Morgan pictures to submit to the school for an exhibit. I sent her some photos of her standing in the Morgan Christian Center after worship when we were undergrads. I always promised to send her a set of pictures I took of the founding members of ANQ that first year when I got around to decluttering and organizing my house. I still haven't found them but will fondly remember Founder Newsome when I do.
The Morgan community has lost a true salt of the earth spirit in Demetria. I am used to sudden losses but this one hurt and affected me deeply. She texted me "Hello, Dave" a day or so before she passed. Life got in the way and I didn't respond in time. I am absolutely sick that I cannot be there for the services and that I didn't give her more flowers while she was living. I am sure my peer group thinks that since we have reached the milestone age of 50 (I know she was a year younger than me) that we have at least 20 more good years remaining since we made it this far. That's not always the case.
My last words to her were, "Well, I guess I'll see you in 2 years since I won't be coming back to homecoming next year. Plus my feet are killing me!!" She said, "Ok, Dave" and we hugged and parted ways. I can't believe that next homecoming reunion won't come to pass. Demetria's untimely passing confirms what we already know: Don't take people and time for granted for tomorrow is not promised. I'm so thankful life put me in Demetria's path. She is and always will be one of my favorite people and Morganites.
God bless her soul and her surviving family.

I would like to offer condolences to the family of Dr. Newsome. She touched the lives of so many, including a friend of mine who said if it weren't for your loved one she would never have finished high school at Dunbar. I'm so glad Dr. Newsome was an inspiration to my friend and so many young people at the other schools she's taught (Dunbar and Poly) and was vice-principal (Westside). May she rest in peace and may God great her at the gates and say well done my faithful servant.

I have known Demetria since she and my brother (Phil Sears) were in nursery school together. When I heard of her passing I was in so much shock that I was actually paralyzed for a minute. She was always a kind, soft spoken young lady. She is so special and one of a kind. To her sisters and dad, I am so very sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love,

For years, Demetria has been active with our group that attends all the theatrical shows at Center Stage. We sit together at the performances, and catch up with one another - before the show, at intermission, and afterward. We are all shocked and deeply saddened at this sudden loss. Here’s what one of our group members just wrote: “I always liked what she had to say about the play afterwards. She had a different perspective than I did and I really enjoyed comparing notes.” We send the family our very warmest regards and hope your grief and pain will evolve, before too very long, into fond and uplifting recollections of wonderful times with Demetria.

You were such a sweet, quiet spirit, who always were so nice to people you interacted with. I remember you as. Brand new teacher, coming to Dunbar, as I worked with new teachers. You wanted to be the very best teacher you could be! Thank you for giving of yourself to others! You will be missed! Rest in Glory, Demetria!
