Who Is Eligible for a Military Funeral? A 10-Point Guide for Families

‘Who is eligible for a military funeral’ is often one of the first questions people ask when a loved one who served passes away.

When loss touches a military family, it can bring both pride and uncertainty about what comes next. Military funeral honors offer a meaningful way to recognize that service and sacrifice, but many families aren’t sure who is eligible for a military funeral or how to begin the process.

At Vaughn Greene Funeral Services, we have walked this journey with many families. The following 10-point guide is designed to help you navigate the process with clarity and care.

1. Eligibility begins with a loved one’s service.

Military funeral honors are available to service members who die while on active duty, veterans discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, and certain members of the Selected Reserve. Specific uniformed services such as the Public Health Service or NOAA Corps may also qualify in some cases.

2. A dishonorable discharge can limit eligibility.

Veterans who were separated from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions are not eligible to receive military funeral honors. There may also be restrictions for individuals convicted of a federal or state capital crime or those who fled prosecution.

3. Military records help confirm qualification.

The most common document used to verify eligibility is DD Form 214 (or NGB-22 for National Guard members). If the original paperwork is missing, families can often request records through the National Archives. Our staff can help you with this step.

4. Early planning makes the process smoother.

Even if a loved one’s passing isn’t imminent, confirming eligibility and gathering important documents ahead of time can ease stress later. Many families find peace of mind in knowing details are already in place.

5. Honors include a powerful and symbolic ceremony.

Eligible veterans and service members receive a moving tribute that may include an honor guard detail, the folding and presentation of the burial flag to the next of kin, and the playing of “Taps.” These traditions remind families that their loved one’s service will never be forgotten.

6. Burial in a national or state veterans cemetery is an option.

Eligible individuals may be laid to rest in a national cemetery or designated state veterans cemetery at no cost to the family. This includes a gravesite, opening and closing of the grave, liner, perpetual care, and a government-furnished headstone or marker.

7. Benefits must be requested.

Military funeral honors are not granted automatically. Families, or the funeral home on their behalf, must submit the proper paperwork and coordinate with the appropriate branch of service to schedule the ceremony.

8. Personal touches can make the service more meaningful.

While the honors are formal, there’s room for personal expression. Displaying medals, uniforms, or photographs, adding patriotic décor, or incorporating the service branch anthem can make the ceremony feel deeply personal and heartfelt.

9. Count on us to coordinate every step.

This process involves multiple steps and it can feel like a lot to manage while grieving. Our experienced staff can assist with everything from verifying eligibility and completing forms to coordinating with military personnel and securing burial space.

10. Every veteran’s story deserves to be remembered.

A military funeral is more than a ceremony. It’s a way to honor courage, service, and love of country. If your loved one served, we can help ensure they receive the tribute they earned with grace and dignity.
