Winter Safety Tips: Ten Ways to Protect Yourself and Those You Love

Winter safety tips are especially important because snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can create extra risks at home and on the road.

Taking some simple precautions can help reduce accidents, prevent emergencies, and bring peace of mind as amid harsh winter weather.

The following ten winter safety tips focus on practical, manageable steps you can take to protect yourself and the people you care about, whether you’re heading out or spending time indoors.

1. Prepare your vehicle ahead of winter weather.

Cold temperatures can take a toll on vehicles, making preparation essential. Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel lines from freezing and ensure you have enough fuel if traffic slows or detours occur. Check tire tread, tire pressure, windshield wipers, and antifreeze levels well before winter weather is expected.

2. Keep an emergency kit in your car for an extra layer of protection.

A winter car kit can mean the difference between a minor delay and a life-threatening situation. Include blankets, a flashlight, non-perishable snacks, water, a small shovel, hand warmers, and a fully charged cell phone with a charging cable. These items help keep you safe and comfortable while you wait for assistance.

3. Adjust driving habits on icy and snowy roads.

Winter driving requires extra patience and caution. Slowing down, increasing following distance, and braking gently all help reduce the chance of losing control. Avoid using cruise control in snow or ice, as it can make it harder to react quickly to slippery conditions. (Source: NHTSA).

4. Clear snow and ice from vehicles to improve visibility and safety.

Before driving, remove snow and ice from all windows, mirrors, headlights, and taillights. Clearing the roof is also important, as snow can slide forward and block visibility when stopping. Good visibility protects both you and other drivers on the road.

Shoveling snow can be physically demanding, especially in cold temperatures. Take frequent breaks, push lighter loads, and avoid rushing. If possible, shovel early before the snow becomes heavy or packed, and stop immediately if you feel short of breath or lightheaded.

6. Make fall prevention a top priority.

Snow and ice make walkways, steps, and entryways hazardous. Keep paths clear, apply salt or sand where needed, and wear sturdy shoes with good traction. Adequate outdoor lighting also helps reduce fall risks during shorter winter days.

7. Protect your home from carbon monoxide exposure.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that becomes a greater risk during winter due to increased use of heating systems, fireplaces, and generators. Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and test them regularly. Never use grills or generators indoors or in garages.

8. Keep vents and exhaust pipes clear to help heating systems work safely.

After heavy snowfall, check that furnace vents, dryer vents, and exhaust pipes are free of snow and ice. Blocked vents can cause dangerous gases to build up inside the home instead of venting outdoors.

9. Stay connected during winter weather to support safety and well-being.

Winter storms can lead to isolation, especially for older adults or those living alone. Regular check-ins by phone or text can provide reassurance and allow concerns to be addressed early. Keep your cell phone charged so you can reach out for help, if needed.

10. Planning ahead brings peace of mind throughout the winter season.

Simple preparation such as stocking medications, keeping flashlights and batteries on hand, and reviewing emergency contacts, helps reduce stress when winter weather becomes unpredictable. Planning ahead allows you to focus on staying safe rather than reacting to emergencies.
