Bessie Young

Obituary of Bessie Young

On Thursday, October 30, 2024 Fludd-Young, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and youngest sister, fell asleep at her home in Baltimore, MD. Bessie was born on May 12,1936 in Summerton, South Carolina - the fourth child of the late Johnnie Fludd and Mable Richburg-Fludd. Her father, a widower, had four children with his first wife (Rachel). Bessie attended Scotts Branch School while in South Carolina as a child. At the age of 16, in 1952 she moved away from South Carolina to start a new life. She settled in New Jersey and subsequently married Ervin Young, Jr. In 1963, Bessie and her children relocated from New Jersey to Baltimore and rejoined her family. Bessie and her siblings were quite family oriented during the course of her 61 years in Baltimore. Initially, all family members engaged in Sunday worship together. While she attended several pentecostal churches, her last membership was at the New Mount Zion Holy Temple of God where her brother Elijah Flood served as Pastor. The Fludd tribe also engaged in entrepreneurship together as well as selling various articles including ceramics and jewelry. Eventually, with the expertise of older brother Elijah, Bessie and family began purchasing real estate, renovating and renting several properties throughout Baltimore City working together to build separate enterprises. This cemented an extended family bond that hasn't been severed but anchored throughout time. Bessie worked for McCormick and Company as a machine operator until she retired as well as several other jobs. Bessie loved all of her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, siblings, etc. Bessie had a beautiful heart, and she was a beautiful person inside and out. Her doors were always welcoming to each and everyone. She loved to cook and she made sure each and everyone ate and had a full belly. We are going to miss that good old fried chicken, homemade mac n cheese, fresh collard greens and kale, yams, cheese cake, sweet potatoes pie, etc. Bessie was preceded by her siblings Johnnie Fludd Jr., Katie Fludd-Massey, Sarah Fludd-McMillian, Evelyn Fludd-Johnson, Elijah Flood, Aaron Fludd, Lillian Fludd-Burton, Enouch Fludd and Israel Fludd as well as her son Michael Young. Her only surviving sibling is Elizabeth Fludd-Frazer. Bessie met and married Ervin Young Jr., in New Jersey, shortly after she left her home in South Carolina. They had seven beautiful children. She leaves to mourn her six children: David Young, Juanita Taylor, Patricia Young-Leggett (Namon Leggett Sr- deceased), Cynthia Heughan, Christine Young-Fleming (Ralph Fleming), Ricky Young (DeirdreYoung). Seventeen grandchildren: Melissa Young, Quincy Young, Shakia Young, Antoine Taylor, Kuretha Taylor-Galloway (Jake Galloway), Angela Leggett-Crawford (William Crawford), Tosha Leggett, Niesha Leggett, Namon Leggett Jr., Ervin Young (Juanita Young), Tyrone Heughan (Alicia Heughan), Nicole Johnson, Benaiah Green (Dawn Green), Aaron Green, Tameka Crowner (Christopher Crowner), Ricky Young Jr., Jenae Young and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, a sister-in-law Mamie Fludd and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We grieve but we grieve in hope. And that hope is that if she fell asleep in Christ, when "the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God" she will rise again! Let us all strive so that, whether living or dead, we also "meet the Lord in the air." (1 Thessalonians 4:16 )
