To Herman Shaw and the family of Carole Lyles Shaw:
I am so saddened to hear of the passing of my friend of sixty years, Carole Lyles Shaw. Carole and I were fellow English majors at Morgan State College during our undergraduate years. In addition to taking many classes together, we worked as great collaborators in the English Club, Lambda Iota Tau National English Honor Society, the 1967-68 “Promethean” yearbook staff (of which she was Editor) and our annual creative writing publication, “The Black Coffee Pot.” We both graduated in the top tier of the Class of 1968 and won Woodrow Wilson Fellowships to attend graduate school. During our first year in graduate school, we stayed in touch, and she visited us from New York and partied with us in Philadelphia. Though we went our separate ways after that, we stayed somewhat in touch simply by following each other’s careers, and it was an absolute delight to see her at Morgan several years ago, when I was dean and she accompanied one of her relatives to orientation for new students. I always knew Carole as a brilliant and thoughtful intellectual and one of my most delightful friends with an absolutely charming wit and sense of humor. We had more laughs working on the yearbook than I can relate. I will always remember and cherish the great times that we had at Morgan. With her passing, the world has lost one of its brightest lights. Hers was a friendship for which I am exceedingly grateful and which I will cherish forever. I will miss her dearly. “Good Night, Sweet Princess, and Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest!”

Our deepest condolences to Carole's family. She was a generous and stalwart member of Baltimore's quilting community even after she moved to Florida. She and Vera got to know each other in Carole's early quilting days and I was privileged to take multiple classes and workshops with her in the past three years.
