Obituary of Elihu Peter Modlin Jr.

Elihu Peter Modlin, known to his loved ones as "Pete," passed away on February 9, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on May 23, 1933, in Baltimore, Maryland, Pete was baptized at and attended a United Methodist church throughout his youth. He was a steadfast believer in Jesus Christ. Pete was a beloved husband of 64 years to Bessie, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. After graduating from Sollers Point High School, Pete began his career at Bethlehem Steel. He then answered the call of duty and proudly served in the Korean War as a member of the United States Air Force for four years. Following his honorable discharge from military service, he rejoined Bethlehem Steel, where he dedicated over 40 years of his life to working as a steelworker. Pete's commitment and dedication were evident both in his military service and his career. Outside of his professional life, Pete had a wide range of interests and hobbies. He cherished spending time with his family and friends, whether it was cheering on the Ravens and Orioles, watching his favorite westerns, or simply greeting friends, neighbors, and even strangers from his front porch. Pete is survived by his loving wife, Bessie, and children: Barry Bey (Sylvia), Peter Moore, Peter Maurice Modlin, Karen Lisa Catlett (Ridgeway), Debra Elaine Modlin, Tracy Doreen Modlin and daughter-in-law LaVonne Cofield. He will also be remembered by his grandchildren: Stacey, Donte, Taka, Chris, Eli, Tori (Corey), Taia, and Ridgeway III, as well as his great-grandson, Chayse McIndoe. Pete is also survived by his sister, Naomi Modlin, sisters-in-law Joyce Dean and Carolyn Modlin as well as a host of loving nephews, nieces, and cousins. Pete was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Cofield, his father, Elihu Modlin, Sr., his mother, Katherine Smith, his stepmother, Bessie C. Modlin and his brothers: Timothy Modlin, Thaddeus Modlin, William Modlin, Thomas Smith, John Smith, and Pete Smith. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Modlin Family Scholarship at Salisbury University. Pete's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be remembered as a devoted family man, a proud veteran, and a hardworking individual who left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
