Obituary of Johnny Gibbs

Johnny Gibbs passed away on January 30, 2024 at the age of 76 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy. Johnny affectionately known as "Cornbread "embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity. He was born to John Leroy Gibbs and Myrtle Leona Towns on February 7, 1947 in his beloved city of Baltimore, Maryland. Johnny received his formal education in the Baltimore City Public School system. From 2004- 2014 Johnny was employed with American Building Maintenance Company at the Maryland Department of Education until his retirement. Johnny was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. On July 5, 1989, Johnny married the love of his life Irene Murdock of Baltimore, Maryland. Johnny enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and last but not least his cat "Pookie- Bae. He loved dancing, music, and was an avid fashion connoisseur. Often asking his wife "How do I look?" because his outfits had to coordinate before leaving the house. Johnny enjoyed going out to dinner with children and grandchildren, talking about sports and reminiscing about the old days. Johnny will be missed by his loving wife of 35 years, Irene, son, John Gibbs (Angie), daughter Lisa Gibbs, step-daughter Michelle Murdock, grandson Geron David (Amy), granddaughter Tanesha Moore (Machawn) of Atlanta, grandson John Gibbs Jr. of Atlanta, grandson Gerald Gibbs, great- granddaughter Kylie David. Two sisters, Peggy Albrook and Yvonne Gibbs, Two brothers, Jerry Gibbs (Regina) of Philadelphia and Donald Brown; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, John Leroy Gibbs and Myrtle Townes; and son, Gerald Gibbs. His departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others who loved him deeply.
