Obituary of William Edward Matthews, Jr.

William Edward Matthews, Jr. "Bill" was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 11th, 1945. He was the son of the late William Edward Matthews Sr. and Jessie Mae Matthews. He was the 3rd of 8 children and the oldest Male son. On July 2nd, 2023, without warning, heaven opened, and our Father called our precious Bill home. Affectionately known as "Bill", William received his education in the Baltimore City School System and got his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from John Hopkins University. Bill worked for NSA and was on active duty and reserve for the United States Air Force, where he retired from both. In total, he served 50 years with the government. Bill was a devoted father to his son Sean, a loving brother to his siblings, a great friend to many, and a fantastic grandfather. He took great pride in caring for his siblings. Traveling was his passion and he loved to tell stories about all the places he had visited. He was a collector of all things unique and beautiful. He loved shopping and never met a sale he could turn down. He loved spending time with his siblings, countless friends, and grandkids. He was always the life of the party and loved hosting friends and family. He was preceded in death by brother, Jimmy Matthews, and three sisters, Barbara Matthews, Evelyn McAlily, and Vendetta Matthews. He leaves to cherish his memories: his son, Sean (Anita); three grandchildren, Aniya, Samari, and Tyree (Gabrielle); one great-granddaughter, Shai; two sisters, Melvina C. Bowens and Francis Matthews; a brother, Paul Matthews; loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends. A viewing will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at Vaughn Greene Funeral Services - East, 4905 York Road, Baltimore, MD 21212, from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am, in the chapel at Vaughn Greene Funeral Services - 8728 Liberty Road, Randallstown, MD 21133. The wake will begin at 10:00 am. The burial will follow the services in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, MD.
