To my soror and the entire family of Dr. Sam Billups heaven has truly received an angel. I recall taking a class with him that prepared those aspiring to become school administrators/principals. He told the class that no student taking his class would ever fail the then required principals "test". My nervousness said, oh no, I do not want to be the first one. Dr. Billups worked us! With his excellent teaching skills and encouragement I passed. When I told him that I passed he was not surprised. He let it be known that with him failure was indeed not an option. Thank you Dr. Billups and may you rest in his eternal peace.

The services for Dr. Billups were beautiful! We lost a good man, but our loss is Heaven's gain. Being assigned to teach at Walbrook in the 1980s changed the trajectory of my professional career because Dr. Billups encouraged us to excel beyond our imaginations. He didn't believe in selfishly holding good people back but exposed us to opportunities for advancement. Today, I can proudly but humbly say I am Pamela Williams Morgan, Ed.D. because our paths crossed. May you rest in eternal peace, Dr. Samuel R. Billups, Jr. You may be gone, but you can never ever be forgotten.

I taught English at Walbrook High School in the 1980’s. I had previously taught only on the junior high level, and I was nervous making the move to high school. Mr Billups chuckled when I told him this. He told me that people who were successful on the junior high level had nothing to worry about because if you could make it there you could make it anywhere. That calmed me down. Mr. Billups was a wonderful principal and a kind and generous human being. The world could use more like him.

As a 7th grader at Washington Elementary in 1958, I would not think of sitting in his Math class without being prepared. He was not only my Math teacher, but my cousin and my mother, Margarete Carter Houston, also taught near his classroom. The lifelong lesson he taught me: Always Be Prepared. What a Pioneer, Trailblazer, Motivator, Encourager, Teacher Extraordinaire!!! Family you are and will remain in our prayers.

Mr. Billups taught me seventh and eighth grade mathematics. He was a great teacher and I can say he was one on my inspiring teachers which caused me to be an educator. Thank God for Mr. Billups.
