I still remember the first time I met Ruth. She made the whole room light up with her loving and caring personality. She could bring peace to anyone in any situation. She always had the words to say. She was an angel of God with a huge heart and lots of love to give. I will forever miss her. My prayers to all her wonderful family and sending my love. May God continue to bless and keep you.

The Bank of Ruth
My name is Karen Shields, and it has been my supreme honor to be one of the Regional Chief Client Engagement Officers at the Bank of Ruth.
In this role, it is my responsibility to connect with all of her customers and visit them, and listen to them, and advocate for them and go back and tell my family and Bank President, family when they need someone or something and follow up on them and make sure they are ok. If they are not ok, it is my job to advocate for them and send them help and invest in them. If they are thriving, it is my job to encourage them and praise them and celebrate them on her behalf. I was raised at this bank and by her three Deputies, Kenneth Williams, Jeffrey Williams and its Chief Operating Officer, my amazing mother, Yvonne Johnson.
I’ve been accused of giving, of doing, of caring, of investing too much. And not in a complimentary “You are such a good person!” way, but in a “You really need to see a therapist!” way. Know that as a Regional Client Engagement Officers at the Bank of Ruth, it’s in my position description. I have never been given the luxury of an “at will” clause so I do not get to quit. I also need you to know that I will be eternally grateful for this job and how it has shaped both my life and the lives of every one of her customers. If you are hearing this, or reading it, you my friend are one of them.
If you crossed her consciousness, even in a nascent slight airy way, you are a customer. And she needs, nay requires that all of her customers survive and thrive and then pay it forward. She requires (and that tense that I am using, facing forward, is intentional and on purpose) everyone who has anything to give to make it so. The founding principles of this company include a high level of delivery to everyone and that included her. She required this high touch not because she was selfish or because she was self-centered, but because it takes a lot to be a Queen and run a bank and you must first be good to yourself to be in a position of strength, so that you have the strength to be good to others. But also, because you should know that your gifts are not free. The more that you receive, the more you have to give back. And mostly because we all, no matter who we are, deserve a high level of customer service.
Grandma never stopped giving to me, no matter how much I already had. She called me every Saturday at noon to make sure that I, was ok. Sentinel checks for not just me but everyone on my watch tower. My branch of the bank. For my birthday this year, I dreamily and gleefully opened my lovely birthday card with two twenties and a crispy new ten-dollar bill. Her annual deposit into the “do something just for you and no one else account”.
I wasn’t always an employee of the Bank of Ruth. For a long time, I was just a customer. Loved, encouraged, supported, carried, mostly a full-time receiver. It was not until I realized that I would always be a full-time receiver, dependent upon what I was being given to survive, coming back repeatedly the bank to cash the checks that she and others gave to me, living paycheck to paycheck unless I moved to the other side of the counter. That is how you get promoted. If you have ever been a customer of the Bank of Ruth, you eventually become a teller, and then a Bank Manager and owner, and Regional Manager, because she teaches you how to go from being a receiver, to a giver.
Here is how it works. You are drawn to her by her soft light and steel will. You may see her and offer to do some small thing for her. Then she throws in a favor for a neighbor who needs something. She is easy to talk to, so you tell her about your friends, neighbors and family. You see her again and she remembers their names and asks fifteen questions about everyone you have every told her about. You only know two of those answers and now you have failed the caring test. So, you go back and learn more to give better answers about how “Liz is doing”. But now you know, and you can’t look away. You do more, you care more, you give more. You give better answers. You are now a teller at the next window of the bank Ruth. She keeps depositing into you so that you can keep depositing into others. She takes care of her executives, and their wealth grows, because of the universal energy that she has created through you, with her spirit of giving.
So, all of you who are here, if you don’t realize that you are an employee with the same job description that I have, to be accountable for your gifts, to keep trying to out-give our founding Mother, well you just haven’t read the “Benefits Section” of your bank contract. I should tell you now to save you the surprises when you read the fine print. Your contract does not expire with the transition to the next life of our President. She’s a founder. But you all have branches in the firm, and her expectation is that you all name new Banks of Giving, in your own name, in your own way, for everyone that you ever know or hear about.
My personal attachment to this amazing woman has always been at the sinew level. I won’t let that change. I have her DNA in more ways than one. And to whom much is given, much is required. I won’t let you down Grandma. Your tree is strong, and I am ready. Next. Woman. Up.
