Broadus Mattison

Obituary of Broadus Eugene Mattison

Broadus Eugene Mattison was born on March 29, 1932, in Honea Path, South Carolina, the third of eight children born to James Claude Mattison, Sr. and Willie Mae Criswell Mattison. He departed on August 8th, 2022, after a courageous and lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Broadus was educated in the Honea Path School System and graduated from the Gantt Rosenwald High School in 1950. He accepted the Lord and received his Christian education from his parents and the Liberty Baptist Church community. After high school graduation he went on to study at South Carolina State (College) University before deciding to travel the world and serve his country in the United States Army. During his 21 years of military service, he performed with distinction in varied peacetime and wartime assignments, including the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. One of his most memorable military assignments was with the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at Morgan State (College) University. From 1962 to 1971 he taught and mentored ROTC cadets for the Department of Military Science. While on active duty in Fort Dix, New Jersey, "Matt", as he was called by his friends, met the love of his life, Dorothy Louise McCall or "Dot," as he affectionately called her. They developed an instant connection and after a whirlwind courtship of six months, they married on August 11, 1960, at the base chapel shortly before he deployed to Vietnam for a tour of duty. From their union four children were born: Keith Broadus, the twins – Eugenia Ann and Kevin Eugene, and Valerie Helaine. After his military retirement in 1971, Broadus began his employment with the State of Maryland as a Unit Administrator at the University of Maryland Hospital. He subsequently received appointments with the Maryland Commission on Human Relations and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Office of Community Relations in 1977. Upon retirement from the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Broadus held the position of Director of Employment Equity. He was an acknowledged expert in equal opportunity law, and his advice was frequently sought even after his retirement in 1993. Broadus is now reunited with his beloved wife and companion of 54 years, Dr. Dorothy McCall Mattison, who preceded him in death in May 2015. His spirit and sense of service is carried on by his four surviving children: Thomas Broadus-Hoffman (Eva Hoffman) of Germany, Keith Broadus Mattison of Vancouver British Columbia, Canada; Kevin Eugene Mattison of Elkridge, Maryland; Valerie Helaine Mattison Brown (Mark Nathaniel Brown) of Elkridge, Maryland. His eldest daughter Eugenia Ann Mattison Gibson (Alfonzo "Eddie" Gibson) preceded him in death on December 18, 2014. Broadus also leaves a legacy of seven grandchildren (Chantelle J.M. Mattison of Baltimore, Maryland, Ashley N. Mattison Burrison-Weeks (Chawn) of San Antonio, Texas, McCall A. Mattison Brown, Mattison A. W. Brown, McKenna A. Mattison Brown of Elkridge, Maryland), Taylor A.
