My Shug! On this day we had a ball. You had just left the beauty shop and we went to dinner. The day went so well, we both said we had to do it again. That Sunday before you transitioned. I got your laundry, gave you a kiss, told you I loved you and would see you on Monday morning. Who knew that God had better plans for you and he is never wrong. I have so many fond memories of Aunt Bernice. We spent lots of time together over the past 20 years. It was my good fortune that a change in my occupation led me to the state of Maryland, as I could travel to Aunt Bern's house in under an hour.
I met her friends and she met many of mine. All who met her frequently asked about her. She had such an infectious, welcoming, genuinely loving personality that made her unforgettable. She could talk to anyone, about most subjects, and appeared to meet no strangers.
She introduced me to Columbia Community Church where I also established membership. Even while being challenged with her health, she often told me that she missed her church and wanted to attend when able. She always knew that I would get her there as her driving the distance would be challenging.
When I last visited with her in early December, I took comfort in seeing her smile. Though I couldn't understand all of her words, I saw her laughing and I laughed and smiled with her. I saw peace in her presence.
I will truly miss you my dear Aunt, yet I will take comfort in knowing you are without pain and willingly accepted your offer of rest.
