Obituary of Mary Theresa Stith
"But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint," Isaiah 40:31.
On Saturday, January 1, 2022, at 8:17 a.m., Mary Theresa Stith departed the physical pains and constraints of this world and gained her heavenly wings and is now resting in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mary Theresa was born on July 6, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Claude Mason and Dollie Fitzgerald Stith. She was the oldest of their four children, as well as the first grandchild. She attended Baltimore City Public Schools and graduated from Edmondson High School in 1964. She remained connected to her classmates from high school and served on the steering committee for their 50th Reunion in 2014. Mary Theresa attended Morgan State College (now University) where she was one of the founding members of the college's chapter of the National Society of Pershing Angels.
Mary Theresa began her career in banking, but soon found her professional passion in the court system. She served for more than 30 years as a courtroom clerk and a lead worker in the Circuit Court of Baltimore City, Juvenile Division for the State of Maryland. As a lead worker, she trained other courtroom clerks and was described by her colleagues as thorough and thoughtful. She emphatically believed in the importance of the court to bring justice and opportunity for the young people it served and felt a deep connection to the other clerks, bailiffs, attorneys, and judges with whom she was fortunate to work.
At an early age, Mary Theresa made Jesus her Savior and Lord and was baptized at Perkins Square Baptist Church where her parents worshiped for over 50 years. She joined New Psalmist Baptist Church in the late 90's and was awe-inspired by the compassion and teaching of Bishop Walter Scott Thomas. One of her most proud accomplishments was completing the New Psalmist three-year discipleship course in May of 2004. She formed many life-long bonds with the other women in her class and fondly referred to them as her "Gem Sisters." Mary Theresa wholeheartedly believed in the awesomeness of God and the power of His unconditional love, often paraphrasing 1 Corinthians 13:13 "Three things will last forever — faith, hope, and love — and the greatest of these is love."
Mary Theresa believed in sharing her faith through acts of love and kindness for family, friends, and strangers alike. She was a great hostess; if you were invited to her home, she often had your favorite dish and beverage ready; likewise she never accepted an invitation without bringing a gift, a bottle, or a covered dish. She was indeed a generous woman, but also a delightfully opinionated one! Mary Theresa never minced her words and was seldom shy to give advice, share her observations, offer a clever retort, or present a story, often masterfully weaving history and moral, whether you were a willing or a coerced listener. She believed that people who worked hard should carve out time for fun and she had a life full of amazing experiences, which contributed to her versatility. Her best adventures included everything from dating and dining with superstars to playing backgammon and sipping coffee with a playlist of what she called "real music" serenading in the background. She had a way of being the life of the party and the observer in the corner all at the same time.
Mary Theresa is preceded in death by her mother and father, brother, Tyrone and sister Adahazell. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Tevera; sister Sonia (Clinton); half-sister Glendora; a resilient and wise set of uncles and aunts, a beloved group of nephews and nieces who affectionately referred to her as Aunt Ree-Ree, a loving Goddaughter, Keirston and Godson, Kevin, a gaggle of cousins and a host of life-long friends.
