Janet Robertson

Obituary of Janet Lee Robertson

Janet R. Robertson, a gentle and genuine soul, born June 23, 1929, transitioned into eternal life on August 1, 2021. She was the second of four children born to Benjamin Robinson and Mary M. (Kimball) Robinson. Janet attended Warren County Public Schools in Warrenton, NC, graduating from Legions High School in 1947. Growing up with her three siblings on the family farm, Janet often relegated her farm chores to the "do it later" list, while she answered the call of a book or magazine. In 1948, Janet was received as a first-year student at St. Agnes School of Nursing on the campus of St. Augustine College (University) in Raleigh, NC. There, Janet formed special sisterhoods with Dorothy Watson Lamberth, Lisbon Turner Williams, Almira Stuart Debnam, and Alnora Stuart Granger. These were lifelong relationships that wove a tapestry of extended family and traditions. While attending St. Agnes, Janet was swept off her feet by the handsome and debonair Craven Robertson, who announced days later after meeting her that he was going to marry her! They were married on May 15, 1950 in Raleigh, NC. To this union was born Cynthia Robertson and Lynda Robertson. While the union was resolved years later, they remained close friends. Janet's thirty-year career as a registered nurse reflected her skill and devotion to hands-on patient care. As a University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, MD staff nurse, she was among the first to be trained to staff the state-of-the-art Shock Trauma Unit. When she left the University of Maryland Hospital, she continued her career at The Prince George's County Public Health Department as a home visiting nurse, concluding her thirty-year professional career in 1987. From her relatively young retirement at the age of 60, until her transition, Janet was always actively engaged in life. She was a long-time resident of Greenbelt, MD, regularly participating in community events. As a member of the Ardwick-Ardmore Baptist Church in Glen Arden, MD, she sang with the senior choir, and was the inspirational energy that resulted in the creation of the church library and establishment of the Senior Golden Age Club. A lifelong student of arts and culture, Janet traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She aptly earned the nickname "globe trotter," and was often joined in her travels by her St. Agnes sisters. Janet loved to dance and could be found doing a little dance in front of the kitchen stove while preparing a meal. In the 1980s, Janet perfected the Hustle dance moves at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. She always interpreted the distinctive sound of Van McCoy's song, "The Hustle" as a personal invitation to get on the dance floor. Janet spent the last several years of her life living in Woodstock, MD, where she was adored and cared for by her loving family and devoted caregivers. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Benjamin and Mary Robinson, and her three siblings, Emma, Mary, and Benjamin Jr. She is survived by daughters Cynthia Cravette Robertson and Lynda Patricee' Robertson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and beloved family and friends.
