~OBITUARY READING~
Devon Lavar Wellington, son of Donna E. Bruce and Dyrrel Wellington was born on June 5, 1989, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Devon received his education at Robert Franklin Stokes Christian School and in the Baltimore City Public School system where he graduated from the Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE) High School. He was in the first cohort of students to apply and be selected to attend this new pilot school. He worked hard at school and was able to excel in many of his classes. Mr. Maher, the principal, describes Devon as one that exuded quiet confidence, cared deeply for others and treated everyone with respect. He further stated his smile lit up a room and made his friends laugh all the time. Mrs. Zahart, his science teacher was very influential in his life. He was inquisitive in her class and enjoyed the many experiments they conducted. Mr. Corbin, the English teacher encouraged him to move beyond his comfort zone.
Devon achieved many academic accolades to include the Distinction Honor Roll and the Principal's Honor Roll for academic excellence. He was Junior Prom King and a fierce basketball competitor who was a Starter on his high school basketball team.
Devon had some amazing accomplishments throughout his life. He participated in the Child First after school program; Youth Works at the Baltimore City Police Department, where he monitored the cameras; Cardinal Shehan drama program, where he had a major roll as one of the Cats in the infamous Cats Play and; volunteered at the Department of Aging, where he was praised for his outstanding clerical skills.
Devon never gave up and was willing to learn new things. One of his post-secondary accolades included attending the Building Employment Success Training (BEST),a job readiness program. There he was enrolled in the Culinary Arts program and obtained status as a Certified Sous-Chef. He cooked and served his mother, Donna, step-father, Dwayne and his brother, EJ a wonderful meal.
At an early age Devon developed a relationship with the Lord. He attended Huber Memorial Church regularly with his grandparents, Ann and Dennis Wellington. On August 7, 2016, Devon rededicated his life to Christ, and joined his family church, Morning Star Baptist Church in Baltimore County.
Devon was a proud father and enjoyed loving on his daughter, Cassidy. He enjoyed spending quality time braiding her hair and taking her to the park. He delighted in building a father/daughter relationship.
As a big brother to EJ, he was always there as an example to help him grow and support him in any way that he could. He enjoyed teaching EJ new things and talking about sports.
Devon was a kind-hearted, fun-loving, sociable person. As a result, he was loved by his family, teachers and peers. Devon left us with many fond memories, we will truly miss him.
