He departed this life at the age of 85 on April 24, 2021, at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore City, Maryland. Arthur, affectionately known since childhood as Bobby, attended church and church school in Monterey, Alabama. Later, the family moved to Spring Hill and later to Frisco City, Alabama. As a young man, he joined his now late sisters, Inell Ligon, Jerry Lyles, Ruth Mason, and Elizabeth Roberts, and his late brother, Willy Smith, who resided in Baltimore City. While there, his daughter, Barbara Ann Smith, was born. He served two tours of duty overseas in the United States Army, from December 5, 1958 to November 22, 1960 and from February 10, 1962 to February 8, 1967, ending his military service in Korea. During this time, he became proficient in martial arts. After his military tenure, he lived independently in Baltimore for many years. He worked as a supervisor for Bethlehem Steel and ran his own bike shop on Saratoga Street. Bobby enjoyed the company of many family members and friends. He loved playing chess, watching television, listening to music, savoring good home cooking, and engaging in conversation, often passing on the benefit of his experiences to others. In his senior years, he became the very first resident of People Helping Others 1 (PHO1) assisted living on Bentalou Street, in Baltimore. As a member of this senior community, he enjoyed being of assistance in any way that he could to both staff and residents. He attended Perkins Square Baptist Church and was an active member of The Happy Times Adult Medical Day Care Center, where he continued to play chess. Daughter, Barbara Ann Smith, is remembered in our acknowledgement that Arthur Lee Smith, is survived and missed by family members and friends, including nieces Yvonne Owens Everett, Christine Plater, Sylvia Harris, Gwendolyn Stokes, Mattie Clay, and Debbie Shropshire; nephews Victor Smith, Kenneth Smith, Todd Lyles, Sean Mason, Dornell Epperson, and a very close younger nephew, Gregory McLean; cousins Willie Geneva Hill, Malinda Epperson, Cynthia Early, Donnie Quarles, Arlene Jones, Burden Ligon, Aldrena Thirkill, and Charles Pryor; as well as a host of younger nieces, nephews, and cousins.
