Mrs. Smith became "Momma Smith" to me. She was my babysitter from age 2, and my before and after school guardian from elementary through middle schools. I will always remember her delicious cinnamon toast in the mornings before school and her special lemon square treats. I can still hear her voice calling me "sugar" and "doll baby" and, giving me words of comfort as a child. Her hugs made me feel like everything was right in the world for that moment. Her arms made me feel safe through my deepest childhood insecurities and sorrows.
I will miss her curtains opening every morning and closing when the sun sets (something I watched from my childhood to adulthood when I moved back to the neighborhood). I will miss her beautiful singing, which she surprisingly graced our neighborhood with from her porch one last time 2 Easters ago.
But, I'm so grateful for the memories, like watching "The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons" in her basement before the school bus, joint family camping trips, and her recent call to compliment my cooking. I'm most thankful for her Christ-like example, knowing she's finally back with her love, Mr. Smith, and knowing that I will eventually see her again on the other side,
Momma Smith's service, kindness and genuine love for me and my family will never be forgotten. My and my parents' prayers are with the family... our family... and we are here for you.
