For her price is far above rubies…Proverbs 31:10 Katherine Burnell Dutton was born in Dinwiddie County, VA to the late Lillian Edna Street and James Fitzgerald on November 4, 1934. The Lord called her from this earthly home of labor, to reward her a heavenly home after a short illness. Sis. Dutton received her education in Dinwiddie County, VA Public School System. When she was a young teenager, her mother decided to move to Baltimore. Sis. Dutton stayed back to be raised by her grandparents, Walter and Sarah Street. She knew they needed her help, and she also wanted to finish school in Virginia. Country life was not easy for Sis. Dutton. Every day at the break of dawn, she had to attend to farm duties and chores before she went to school and then continue when she came home. Sis. Dutton often told her grandparents, "When I graduate, I'm moving to the city with my mother". And, she did just that. At the age of 16, Sis. Dutton graduated from Dinwiddie High School. The very next day, she packed her bags, got on a bus, and headed to the city life of Baltimore. In 1951, Sis. Dutton was employed at Lutz Lunch Room for a short period. In 1952, she met and married Thomas Dutton and from that union five children were born; three proceeded her in death – Thomas Dutton Jr., Deborah Dutton and Theresa Dargan. Sis. Dutton always tried to provide the best for her family; but living in the projects in Cherry Hill just wasn't enough. In the summer of 1967, her family moved from the projects to a family home of many years on Garrison Boulevard. They felt like the Jeffersons – "Moving On Up". Sis. Dutton always provided a loving home and atmosphere for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would even open her home to their friends when their parents put them out. Sis. Dutton believed every child should have a warm place to lay their heads and never go to bed hungry. There were many good times shared on Garrison Boulevard, but Sis. Dutton missed her family in Virginia. Therefore, every summer, for several years, her family headed to Virginia for a family vacation. For Sis. Dutton, it was home away from home. Sis. Dutton was baptized in Jesus' name in July 1972 at Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church. Later that year, in October 1972, she received the Holy Ghost. The very next month, she received the right hand of fellowship under the leadership of Pastor Lucille T. Callaway. Sis. Dutton served on many auxiliaries. She was the church's organist for over 45 years and actively served until her health began to fail early this year. She was also a member of the Adult Choir, the Gospel Choir, and the BIW Choir. Sis. Dutton served on the Pastor's Aide and was President of the Willing Workers. Sis. Dutton loved her church family and was certainly loved by her pastor, Pastor Callaway. There was nothing she wouldn't do if her pastor asked. Although Sis. Dutton will be greatly missed by her family, friends and church, we thank God for the many lives she touched. She leaves to cherish her sweet memories, daughters Patricia Dutton and Brenda Washington; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 1 brother and sister-in-law Harry and Dorothy Brown; 2 sisters Marilyn Brown and Dorothy Valentine; nieces, nephews, cousins, a god-daughter and a host of friends.
