Brenda Myers

Obituary of Brenda Ann Myers

BRENDA ANN MYERS was born on December 29, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland to Ada Myers. In addition to her mother, she was raised by a host of great aunts and her beloved grandmother, Sarah Garrison Myers. She was educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools' System, having attended schools including Booker T. Washington, Edmondson High School, and Carver Vocational-Technical High School. While at Carver, she studied Cosmetology. Following graduation, she briefly worked in a hair salon. A lifelong learner, Brenda began her pursuit of a college degree post-retirement. She majored in Political Science at the Coppin State University. Brenda absolutely loved her classes, classmates, professors, and the university. She left this world only a few credit hours shy of earning her Bachelor's Degree. In 1966, Brenda began her Federal career with the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn, Maryland. Throughout her time with the Federal Government, Brenda served in various positions in Social Security in Woodlawn and Metro West in Downtown Baltimore, and with the Internal Revenue Service. She retired from federal service around 2001. She also worked briefly at Nordstrom in Towson, Maryland shortly after its opening in the early 1990s. Brenda was raised in the Perkins Square Baptist Church. She often told stories of "old" Perkins Square and the Church's move from The Square to its present location on Edmondson Avenue. She served the church in various ministries, but most important and most lasting was her membership on the Senior Usher Board beginning around 1981. Brenda served her Usher Board, the Baltimore (City) Unit of the Interdenominational Church Ushers Association of Maryland, Inc. (ICUA), and the National United Church Ushers Association of America, Inc., (NUCUAA) as Financial Secretary at many levels. She also served on the Eastern Region and Alma C. Hawkins National Public Relations Committee of NUCUAA, Inc. From state conventions to mid-winter conferences, state memorial services to regional conferences and national conventions, Brenda attended them all. She also received certification in all levels of the George T. Grier School of Ushering of NUCUAA, Inc. Though a lifelong member of Perkins Square, Brenda made the decision to leave Perkins Square and join the Douglas Memorial Community Church, where she remained a member until her passing. Under Rev. Raphael G. Warnock, she was appointed a leader of the J.O.Y. Senior Ministry. Brenda was a faithful and active member of the Board of Stewards until her passing. Brenda was at one time an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Calvary #32 Lodge. She remained active throughout her life in a variety of organizations including The League of Women Voters of Baltimore City, where she served as a member of the Board. Of all of her accomplishments and activities, none compared to her role as a Mother. On Friday, March 25, 1988, she gave birth to Jasmine E. Myers-Duncan. Brenda gave Jasmine her everything. She surrounded her daughter with wonderful and encouraging people, exposed her to a variety of activities, peoples, places, and things, and made sure that she received the best education. Brenda never stopped being a loving mother. Motherhood provided so many challenges, and so much joy, until Brenda became a grandmother. On Saturday, February 1, 2014, Brenda's life changed and her love grew with the birth of her only grandchild, Camille A. Wilson. There never was a love so great as the love Brenda showed to Camille. Brenda leaves her daughter, her granddaughter, her first cousin, Joyce Jones (Louis), cousins Sean Garland, Robin and Joanne Mack, and a host of other family and friends to cherish her memory.
