Obituary of Samuel Williams

Samuel Williams was born December 23, 1933, to the late Bessie Lynch-Williams and Norman Williams, Sr., in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At an early age, he grew in faith and confessed belief in Christ. At age 17, he met and fell in love with his soulmate, then age 12, Marva Charlean Thompson. They joined in holy matrimony on July 1, 1961, and would remain together for nearly sixty years. Shortly, after graduating from Clairton High School, in 1951, Samuel enlisted in the Air Force, and departed for basic training. He transitioned from the Air Force into the Army in order to pursue his interest in the medical field. He received technical training and became a dental technician. Samuel served as a medic and completed tours of duty, during the Korean War, in 1954, and later when he was stationed in Furth, West Germany, from 1969 through 1972. He retired and was honorably discharged from the Army, in 1978, having earned the rank of Sergeant First Class with twenty-seven years of service. Samuel and Marva rejoiced in the births of two, dynamic sons, Jeffrey Lewis Williams in 1962, and Gregory Samuel Williams in 1969. The Williams family lived on military bases in Fort Knox, Kentucky, Furth, West Germany, and Fort Meade, in Maryland until 1976 when they relocated to Baltimore County. Samuel went to work for the U.S. Post Office, and he and Marva became members of Central Summerfield United Methodist Church, in 1979. He was actively involved in church and community activities serving as senior choir member, Treasurer, United Methodist Men's Day Chairman and President for consecutive years, and he was a Pack Leader for the local Boy Scouts of America at the church. Samuel also was an active member of the National Association of Letter Carriers [NALC], attending and participating in union activities and annual conventions nationwide. He retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1996, following seventeen years of civil service. Hailing from Pittsburgh, Samuel was a Steeler/Pirate Man and a sports enthusiast through and through. He enjoyed attending family reunions, sporting events, musicals, plays, movies, Christian gatherings, and vacations with family ranging from Caribbean cruises, Canadian voyages, to Mexico and Hawaii. He loved God, family, and life more than anything in the world. Samuel fell ill and was hospitalized briefly in late January. He was called by God and his soul returned to the Almighty on February 21, 2021, at the age of 87. He will be lovingly remembered and cherished by his sons, Jeffrey Lewis Williams and Gregory Samuel Williams; his daughter-in-law, Janice Olivia Hunt-Williams; one grandson, Christian Matthew Hunt; his sister, Nadine Phipps; sisters-in law Dolores Smith, Barbara Yates, and Gloria Jean Simmons; brother-in law Herman Thompson (Roberta), and cousin, Maurice Sharpe (Helen), niece Collette Hill-Taylor (Lane), Aleta Johnson (David), Gina Brown, Shirley and Ronald Williams, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, the Payne/Jones/Sessoms and Savoy families, and an extended family of friends.
