Thelma Fly

Obituary of Thelma Elizabeth Fly

Thelma Elizabeth Fly was born in Baltimore, MD on July 13, 1939 to Mary Elizabeth Fletcher of Baltimore (MD) and William Byrd of Winnsboro (South Carolina). She was the oldest child of four born to them and later, to three more siblings by her mother and Bonus Dad, Walter Brown Jr. She was the quintessential oldest child; given lots of responsibility and handling all with aplomb. She was educated in Baltimore City public schools (skipping two grades) til graduating at 16 and attending, Coppin Teachers College. She was planning to become an elementary school teacher but the Lord had other plans for her. She met and married Willie Wilkens Fly, and then started her new life adventures in New York. Living and loving in Brooklyn, New York for about 20years (where all three of her children were born). Life's adventures brought her back to Baltimore with her three babies in tow. She was a fierce Mama Bear to her three Cubs as she was now a single Mom and worked as many as three jobs at a time to support them all. Thelma was loved and respected by all she met and knew her, whether at her new church home, St. Francis Xavier, her many Administrative, Civil or Government (Federal & State) jobs and positions. Thelma was very proud of all of her family; especially her siblings AND her children - Sabrina, Jason and Jonathan. Thelma was extremely intelligent, fierce in her faith, convictions and love for her family and friends. Her fierceness was sorely tested for her final decade as she valiantly battled Stage 4, Ovarian Cancer winning many battles but losing the Cancer war from which she ultimately succumbed at her beloved Mercy Medical Center on Thursday; February 11, 2021. She leaves to mourn; children - Sabrina (Marvin), Jason (Catherine) and Jonathan Sr./Jonny (Kamilah). Grandchildren; Avondre, Jonathan Jr/Lil Jonny, Tyrik, Jadun and Hunter with one Great Grandchild, Kaylee. Siblings; Clorie (Ed), Delores, Walter (Bernice) and Lyn. Brother, Will Byrd, Jr and sister Ayoka Brown Bennett both preceded her in death. A host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends (like family), neighbors and acquaintances also left to cherish her memory."
