Obituary of Helena Washington
Helena Tucker Washington, daughter of the late Nannie Drummond Tucker and Matthew Tucker was born on December 21, 1926 in Brunswick County, Virginia.
She departed this life on December 15, 2020 after a brief illness. She was the last of twelve siblings.
She was educated in the Brunswick County Public School System. She accepted Christ at a very early age and was baptized at Good Hope Baptist Church in Blackridge, Virginia. At the time of her death she was a member of the Emmanuel Free Will Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. She was a faithful and devoted member until her passing. She joined the church in 1966 and is an original member. Throughout the years she held several positions in the church. She served as Supervisor of Sunday School, sang on the choir, was President of the Nurses Unit, held a position as a Missionary and was honored to be named a Deaconess. She attended her church faithfully until her health started to decline.
She moved to Baltimore, Maryland and resided with her late sister, Nellie Tucker Wynn.
She met John Washington and they married in 1948, out of their union was born Ernestine Washington Scott, Pamela Washington Glenn who preceded her in death, and John Jeffrey Washington.
Her greatest joys were her children, grandchildren, and her deep relationship with her Savior.
For many years she stayed home to raise her children, later she took a job as a Teaching Assistant with the Baltimore City Public School System. She loved her job because it centered on children. She retired from the school system in 1992. During her years of employment she also took on a second job, being a mother to her grandchildren after her daughter Pamela passed away in 1987. She made many sacrifices to be sure they had a loving childhood and never felt abandoned.
Her hobbies were cooking for her family, by the way she is known for her sweet potato pies, ministering to the sick and shut in, and working in her small yard.
In October 2015 she moved to Quality Care of Buckingham Assisted Living Facility where she was lovingly cared for until her death.
She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched, she leaves to cherish her memory: her spouse of seventy two years, John Washington, her devoted daughter and son, Ernestine Washington Scott, John J Washington, devoted granddaughters, Lauren E Glenn and Kelsey B Washington, grandsons, Christopher and Corey, great grandchildren, Logan, London, Jayden, Kyra, Cameron, and Tashon, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
