Attending a Summertime Funeral? Follow These Helpful Attire Guidelines

Choosing attire for a summertime funeral can be challenging, but there are ways to keep your cool while demonstrating respect for the departed.

Balancing respect for the somberness of the occasion with the practical considerations of hot weather can be daunting.

Here’s a guide to help you decide what to wear to a summertime funeral so you can feel confident that you are dressed appropriately and comfortably.

Eight Guidelines for Summer Funeral Attire

1.     Lighten up.

Instead of heavy black or dark blue wool garments, go with a tan or grey in a lighter and more summery material. Look for natural materials such as cotton and linen that are lightweight and breathable but still appear crisp and neat.

2.     Don’t be flashy.

The weather may be steamy but that doesn’t mean you should show more skin. Keep things classy by wearing short-sleeved shirts and blouses, wearing knee-length or longer skirts and dresses. Look for garments that flow easily and aren’t too form-fitting. A funeral is not the time to draw attention with flashy prints or bright colors.

3.     Simplicity is best.

Accessories should be kept as basic as possible, with jewelry being understated. It’s traditional that women wear hats to funerals but baseball caps and other headwear should be avoided.

4.     Choose subdued colors.

While lighter colors are appropriate for summer, select muted tones such as pastels, soft blues, or pale neutrals. Avoid vibrant or neon colors that might be seen as too bright and cheerful for the occasion.

5.     Consider lightweight layers.

Opt for a light cardigan, blazer, or shawl that can be easily removed if it gets too warm, but still provides coverage if the indoor venue is air-conditioned.

6.     Avoid strong fragrances.

Skip heavy perfumes or colognes, as they can get overwhelming in the heat. Instead, choose subtle or unscented personal care products out of respect for others in attendance.

7.     Respect religious customs.

If the funeral follows specific religious customs, such as covering the head or wearing specific colors, adhere to these guidelines. If you are unsure about what to wear, ask the family for guidance.

8.     Keep the weather in mind.

Check the weather forecast beforehand. Summer can bring intense heat, humidity, and sudden storms. Dress accordingly so you remain comfortable throughout the service. Bring an umbrella or hat if rain is in the forecast, and keep an extra pair of flat shoes in the car if the terrain is likely to be muddy.

By balancing reverence for the occasion with practical considerations, you can ensure that your attire is appropriate for end-of-life events throughout the year. Dressing thoughtfully shows your respect for the departed and their loved ones while allowing you to stay comfortable in potentially challenging weather conditions.
