Obituary of George Eldon Slade, Sr.
George Eldon Slade, Sr affectionately known as "Money" was born October 30, 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Marie (Thompson) and Edward Slade. He was the oldest of five siblings.
He transitioned peacefully on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024 at his home.
George was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. At an early age he demonstrated good work ethics. He began shining shoes on the streets of east Baltimore and selling newspapers with his younger brother John who preceded him in death. George began his employment at American Smelting Planting in Baltimore for more than 20 years until the company relocated to Texas. He was then employed with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works for an additional 20 years before becoming the entrepreneur of Slade's Moving and Hauling. George's dream of becoming a member of the United States Military came to an abrupt halt as a result of a car accident where he broke his arm in four places. However, he always maintained a place in his heart for military personnel and continuously made monetary donations to assist the soldiers and their families in need.
"Money" loved R & B and jazz music. He became a lifetime member of the Left Bank Jazz Society and sang with the group, "The Tank House Five" while working in a local west Baltimore bar with his friends Rodney and Jim Daddy (Bozo). "Money" was a people's person and made numerous friends and acquaintances during his journey of life.
At an early age his grandmother Pinkie Jones (Big Mama) introduced him to Faith Baptist Church on Ashland and Bond Streets. In 2005, George renewed his faith in God by becoming a member of Nazarene Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor James Thompson. On July 11, 2010 he was ordained as a Deacon. George was inspired by his current Pastor Alphonzo Davis' leadership to the congregation and his counsel to the community. He served on the Men's Chorus, Pastor's Aide Ministry and was always in attendance for Saturday Church School. Deacon Slade loved Wednesday night Bible study and was always asking questions. He was a pillar of our church, a steadfast servant of God and a source of strength for our congregation. His unwavering faith touched countless lives. Deacon Slade exemplified Christ's teaching through his kindness, generosity and dedication. His love for God and others left a mark on our hearts and our church community.
