Obituary of Lloyd Lewis, Jr.
Lloyd Lewis Jr., son of the late Lloyd Lewis Sr. and Alberta (Brown) Lewis, was born on October 21, 1926, in Hallwood, VA. He went peacefully to his heavenly home on December 10, 2023.
When a young boy, Lloyd's family moved to Pocomoke City, MD. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as soon as he was able and proudly served his country for 12 ½ years. He served during the Korean War and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. After active duty, Lloyd worked at Bethlehem Steel until he was introduced to truck driving. Driving tractor-trailers was one of his greatest passions. He drove for numerous years working for companies like I&L Candy and Tobacco and Englanders. After many years of regional trucking, he finally settled in at home working as a chauffeur foreman with the City of Baltimore. Lloyd also worked part-time for Burns Security Service. He retired from Baltimore City in 1988.
Shortly after returning from the military, Lloyd met and married his sweetheart, Narcissus. They raised five loving children. Lloyd and his family were always active in church. Their first church home was Huber Memorial United Church of Christ. In 1980, Lloyd and Narcissus joined Ray of Hope Baptist Church (ROH). At Ray of Hope, Lloyd was known for his welcoming smile and Sunday outfits, complete with hats and his Bible. An avid singer, Lloyd joined the ROH Mighty Male Chorus and enjoyed traveling to different churches to sing. His favorite song was, "Heaven is Looking Down on Me". He served on the ROH Public Safety Ministry and was also named Ray of Hope Man of the Year in 2007. Lloyd was a helper throughout his life and would help his neighbors whenever he could. He was active in the neighborhood and participated in politics. He was ready to talk and share with anyone who would listen and could often be heard sharing his words of wisdom with the neighborhood youth. He started a neighborhood baseball team and was an active member of the Northeast Community organization. He worked with politicians like Mary Pat Clarke, Clarence "Du" Burns, and Martin O'Malley fighting for the underdog and advocating for better housing and living conditions. Lloyd had many humorous sayings, but his most popular ones were in response to someone asking him, "How are you doing?" He would reply, "Kicking but not high" or "Like the duck that missed the (slaughter) truck."
Lloyd's greatest passion was his family, and he would always talk about them proudly. He leaves to treasure his memory, His devoted wife, Narcissus, his five children: Richard Lewis (Gail), Keta Steele, Lloyd Lewis III (Kim), Adrienne Dillard (Duane), and Noreene Lewis; 13 grandchildren: Eric Hayes, Ferne Dillard, David Hayes, Bellamy Shoffner, Phillip Wilson, Byron Lewis, Daneene Lewis, Keta Peterson, Richard Lewis, Jr., Thomas Davis, Dyone Watson, Christopher Lewis, Randy Hines, 21 greatgrandchildren, one great-great grandchild, one sister, Christine Hollis, one brother-in-law, Tommy Edwards, and a host of other relatives and friends.
