Obituary of Gregory Harvey
Gregory Harvey was the son of the late Ned and Zelma Marie Harvey. He was born in Baltimore, at Baltimore City Hospital on August 19, 1955. It is said that Greg entered like a hurricane; and in many ways he did.
According to the Sun Paper, dated August 19, 1955, Baltimore faced the worst hurricane in its history, causing more than 400 people to be evacuated from east of the city.
He attended Baltimore City Public Schools and excelled in math and music. Drums and percussions were his instruments of choice. And wow, could he play!
From a young child beating on the lids of trash cans, marching in the band to performing professionally on stage with several well-established bands. You could see Greg play throughout the city, often with his mother and sister Alice watching him perform.
He loved music; he was music. He walked as if gliding to music and his knocks at the door were always in rhythm. No one knocks like Greg.
Gregory had a firm belief in GOD, and as a young child, he loved to go to church and attend revivals with his mother and cousin Rev, Dr. Delores B. Dorsey. He wrote about this belief in one of his last journal entries.
He often talked for hours about faith with his brother Carlisle and enjoyed attending Walking Faith Family Ministries, under the leadership of Pastor Reginald Willis; where he played his drums in praise.
A hard worker with a big heart, Greg was a caregiver to many. He helped take care of his father, during his illness, easing the stress on his mother and thereby making his father's last days a bit brighter.
Gregory did everything with his own unique style. He was also a real Mr. Fix It. If you had an odd job to be done, he was your man. Greg worked at several organizations throughout his life, including USF&G in Mount Washington, Lafayette Square Nursing Home, Diamond Press Printing Company and The Law Offices of Fox & Levine, among others. Greg was always in motion. He kept busy and moved quickly, as he was on to the next thing.
He loved helping people and he loved his family! Everyone who met Gregory, had a unique story about the experience. This is a true testament to the impression he left.
Gregory was popular and loved children. He was an excellent cook, making the best fried chicken and mashed potatoes; a skill he no doubt inherited from his mother.
Gregory was a true original. He could both frustrate you and make you laugh simultaneously.
Recently, Gregory's health began to fail, his walk slowed, and the rhythm in his stride shifted. GOD in his infinite wisdom, saw that it was time to silence the beating drum and to let Gregory take his rest. And so, it was.
Gregory very peacefully transitioned home to renew his strength and to join a new band. A band that will never cease. He now has a new pair of drumsticks, a new walk and there is nothing but joy.
Greg was proceeded in death by his brothers Gerald Harvey and Lewis Lynch. He leaves to celebrate his legacy, sisters: Alice L. Johnson, Yvonne Barbour, and Dr. Alicia B. Harvey-Smith; brothers: Dr. Rufus Sylvester Lynch, and Carlisle C. Harvey, Sr., a devoted brother-in-law, Major Donald W. Smith, sister-in-law, Verita Lynch and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. We are comforted to know that Gregory is at peace, and it is well with his soul.
