My deepest condolences to Ivan’s lovely family and many friends,
I will always hold a special place in my heart for Ivan for this reason, he was instrumental in introducing me to my future husband, his hand ball partner John Semidei.
It was back in 1969, Ivan was invited to a house party on Paladino Avenue in East Harlem and wanted John to accompany him. John refused, said he wasn’t prepared. Ivan was very persistent, went into John’s closet selected a shirt and pants, (even pressed the pants) and off they went. The rest is history, thank you Ivan!
I was always impressed that even though miles apart he never forgot his childhood schoolmates from Saint Cecelia parochial school,
John Castro, Hector Hernandez & John Semidei.
Now as mature men, when they could, they would meet up at the Roxy Hotel or in El Barrio to catch up on life, old times, spirituality, and without question their mutual love of Latin music.
A beautiful friendship that has lasted over 55 years.
We will all miss him dearly, until we meet again.

Q: What was Ivan like as a child?
A: Ivan was always cheerful and laughing. We had a lot of fun at St. Cecilia grammar school in East Harlem. We both lived on 104th street in El Barrio. We even served as altar boys. Ivan was very intelligent and always got good grades. I will miss him dearly. Ivan and his family will always be in my prayers. May he be comforted by Our Lord Jesus Christ for eternity.

Q: What will you miss most about Ivan?
A: Favorite memories with my friend, Ivan, we would always start our conversation with hey it’s my brother from another mother followed up with a laugh. We spent time hanging out on my deck smoking cigars telling stories about his vacation with his girls and on the occasion he would bust out in a salsa dance keeping everyone entertained. Will miss talking smack and listening to old vinyl on his souped up system. RIP my brother from another mother

To Ivan’s family and loved ones, My sincere condolences! May the Lord give you strength during these hard times, but know that Ivan is at peace. It was years after working with him by phone that I had the great pleasure of meeting Ivan in person at the Roxy. Great memories as we listened to Latin music and instruments with his childhood friends, and Bob C, Coco and I, and drove to Spanish Harlem for that good home cookin. Ivan was a classy, decent gentleman. I will miss Ivan’s laugh, discussions about life and music, and the Zoom sessions we held periodically. Even when in pain, he brightened the room with his laugh and smile. God bless!
