18.25245043 BTC (approx CAD $1.6 million) was drained from my account on July 29th in the Coldcard wallet hack. My Bitcoin was in cold storage. My keys were stored on a Coldcard device that was kept in a safety deposit box and had never been connected to the internet. However, hackers discovered a vulnerability in the portion of the hardware wallet's code used to generate seed phrases. This allowed them to use AI to brute-force seed phrase guesses. I was at our cottage and only heard about the hack today.
"No way this affects me," I thought.
I logged into the Wasabi Wallet software to view my Bitcoin wallets.
Right away, I saw a series of red withdrawal transactions, and I knew.
Between 9:36 p.m. and 9:43 p.m. on July 29, every wallet I had had been emptied.
18.25245043 BTC was gone. That's just over CAD $1.6 million.
Perhaps the hardest part was that I did everything right.
I quickly contacted Morphohack Cyber Service, a crypto recovery service that I was referred to by a colleague at work who is knowledgeable about cybersecurity. To my great relief, I was able to recover my BTC in less than 72 hours after the incident. Morphohack employed blockchain forensic analysis to complete the recovery process. It seems that hackers have developed new methods and tools to gain access to Bitcoin wallets, but services like Morphohack make it easier to recover crypto assets without restrictions. Emma Lois and I became family the day her father and mother said, "if you're going to call Nancy (her father's sister) your Aunt Nancy; then Anna & I are now your Aunt Anna & Uncle Otis." So that made us "cousins." It has been my pleasure to be connected to Emma & her family. She was such a loving and dedicated person. I enjoyed the moments she & I would laugh so hard during a phone conversation 'til we almost cried. She will be missed, but will always be in my heart.

<p>My first vivid memories of my cousin Emma Lois go back to the village where I grew up, Kittrell N. C. on highway #1, 9 miles south of Henderson and 35 miles north of Raleigh, N.C. She came every summer when we were in elementary school and stayed two weeks. My Uncle Gillis, her grandfather, Rev. G. E. Cheek, would bring her for two weeks when he conducted revival at two churches in the area, back-to-back. My sister Betty and I were always excited to have another playmate. We loved having company to join us in playing with our dolls, our pet duck Downey and our pet hen Chick-A-Lee. We played house, pick-up-sticks, checkers, jack rocks, autoharp and croquet--- but our big joy was playing on the sawdust pile at the sawmill across the railroad tracks.</p>
<p>Otis Jr., her brother, would come occasionally and would stay a shorter time. He had to be reined in frequently because he was a known prankster. His specialty was ghost stories. He told the scariest stories and we girls would cower in the car or in a corner and scream and scream and beg him to stop. Much to our surprise, that seemed to egg him on. One day he did something that topped a ghost story. He let our outside dog in the house. Rags ran rapidly through the house like any thrilled dog would do. Emma Lois, who was terrified of dogs, screamed at the top of her lungs, and ran as fast as she could to get away. She escaped Rags by climbing on top of our kitchen table. We were aghast, having never seen a human standing on a kitchen table! It was a moment frozen in time. Rags thought she was there for his entertainment, so he continued to bark. We were in shock that she on top of our table. Rags continued to be fascinated and Emma Lois continued to scream. After being paralyzed for a moment by this scene, we got Rags outside, coaxed Emmas Lois off the table, calmed her down, and hugged her up. Big comforting vibes were flowing. We all recovered.</p>
<p>And now fast forward to another era.</p>
<p>Emma Lois opened a door for Betty and me. She graduated from high school in 1962, a year before I did and went to UNC-G, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a white school. She put in our consciousness that we could do that, too! So, I applied and was admitted in 1963, and Betty applied and was admitted in 1964. We were told later that they only admitted Black women who were valedictorians or salutatorians in their class. I was one of 10 Black girls in a class of 1,200 white freshmen women. Emma Lois and I both majored in Music Education with piano as our major instrument. Her dorm room was a magnet for gatherings -- lots of laughter, stories, and snacks! </p>
<p>The UNC-G seed that she planted produced fruit that I could not have anticipated. I became the first Black graduate student in the School of Music at UNC-G. A key professor encouraged me to apply for a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship to study the Zoltan Kodaly approach to teaching music at the Liszt academy in Budapest. Upon my return to the US, I was the only Black expert in the Kodaly Approach in the US – a status I held for a few years. Three years later that led to me being the first Black person to teach in the School of Music at UNC-G and being one of only three Black faculty at the UNC-G campus. These experiences informed all the stages of my career: Chair of Music Education at the University of Puget Sound, Manager in Corporate Marketing at Control Data Corp, Director of Citizen Education at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and President and Founder of Millennium Consulting Group.</p>
<p>Thank you, Emma Lois, for helping put me on this trajectory.</p>
<p>Thinking about more recent situations, I am in awe of how she maintained and nurtured 50+ year old friendships from college; how she kept impeccable records of our multi-year family land deliberations to settle the estate of my grandfather -her great grandfather Rev. Nathaniel Cheek (we would call and ask her to send a document and she would retrieve it from her impeccably organized files within a few minutes); how she read documents with the eye of an eagle; how she was never too busy to instantly respond to a call or a text; how she could keep so many people on her radar to do thoughtful acts for.</p>
<p>Thank you, too, Emma Lois, for making your family and friends the centerpiece of your life, for gathering our college friends for lunch at your home when I visited you, and for making a generously giving life look easy! </p>
