Obituary of Doris Cooke
Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Doris "Williams" Cooke, a devoted educator, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at age 93.
Born in Baltimore on May 26, 1932, Doris was raised by her mother, the late Elizabeth Williams Smith, on Baltimore's west side and attended Frederick Douglass High School. From an early age, she possessed a deep love for "talking" and connecting with people, gifts that would shape both her personal life and career.
Her passion for communication and learning led her to pursue foreign languages. Doris earned a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages from Morgan State University and was honored as a candidate for a Fulbright scholarship. She later completed advanced graduate coursework in education.
Officially and affectionately known as "Madame Cooke," Doris dedicated more than 30 years to the Baltimore City Public School System, teaching French and Spanish at Booker T. Washington and Herring Run Middle Schools. Even after retirement, her passion for education continued as she remained committed to teaching and mentoring young people at Morgan State University, Coppin State University, and McDonough Catholic School. Through foreign language instruction, she opened the minds of generations of Baltimore students to cultures, communication, and possibilities far beyond their immediate surroundings.
Doris never met a stranger. She had a remarkable gift for connecting with people and believed deeply that "because you are blessed, you must be a blessing to others." She raised her children with that same philosophy and spent her life encouraging, uplifting, and supporting others, especially young people. Her impact as an educator was evident throughout her life, and former students often stopped her on the street to thank her for the difference she made in their lives.
While teaching at Booker T. Washington, she met the love of her life, Wilbur "Bill" Cooke, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, service, and community, and shared 57 loving years of marriage. She was the heart of her family, a source of unwavering kindness, wisdom, and love, even during life's hardest moments. Doris cared for many beyond her immediate household and loved unconditionally. Her generosity of spirit was perhaps her greatest gift.
A devoted member of Epworth United Methodist Chapel, Doris served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, Chair of the Women's Day Committee, and received a Trailblazer Award for her service to the church community.
Doris was also deeply involved in civic and social organizations. She was a charter member of the Patapsco River Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, where she served as chaplain and chair of the National Trends and Services, International Trends and Hospitality Committees. She was also a member of Club Dejouir and served as chaplain, corresponding secretary, and historian. She was also active with the Baltimore Chapter of Jack and Jill of America. Guided by her belief in service, Doris spearheaded charitable initiatives for families in need, including annual Thanksgiving basket donation programs, SAT Prep, and other community outreach efforts.
Doris found joy in shopping, music, travel, and game shows. She was an avid bowler and a member of the Wood Knockers, Chalk Pushers, Lucky Dozen, and Inner-City Rollers bowling leagues. She loved all word games, and enjoyed spirited Scrabble marathons with her cousin Carol and lively pinochle games with friends at Bob Evans.
One of Doris' favorite sayings was that she was "going down the road," a phrase her family knew meant a joyful trip to Dover Downs in Delaware, where she delighted in playing and often winning at the casino.
She also loved traveling with her husband and family. Her journeys took her to Venezuela, England, and Paris. She especially treasured summers in Hilton Head and traveled the country as a proud "golf wife" alongside Bill. Her favorite destination was Las Vegas, where she celebrated many wedding anniversaries, enjoying the city lights, shows, and excitement.
Doris was known lovingly by many names, Cookie, BooBoo, G-Mommy, Goddie, Cuzie, and Aunt Doris.
She leaves to cherish her memory and continue her lifelong charge to "be a blessing to others," her daughters, Melinda Cooke Vandaveer and Carol Cooke; her son-in-law, Kevin Vandaveer; her granddaughters, Yvah Vandaveer and Kimberly Dodson and her husband, Max Berger; her devoted and beloved sister/cousin, Carol Bell; her cherished "furry" companion, Grady; and a host of extended family members, dear friends, former students and all those whose lives were touched by her warmth, wisdom and kindness.
