Obituary of Katherine Ann Banks
Please share a memory of Katherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Katherine Ann Banks, affectionately known as "Kate" or "BaBa"—a proud native of the East Towson community and a beloved presence everywhere she went.
Katherine was born on February 27, 1954, in Towson, Maryland, to the late Carrie and George Banks. She was raised in Towson, where she attended Baltimore County Public Schools and graduated from Towson High School in 1973. With a natural love for children and a nurturing spirit, Katherine pursued coursework in Early Childhood Education at Towson University (formerly Towson State University) and earned her Child Development Associate Certification in 1982.
Teaching was not just her profession—it was one of her greatest callings. Katherine began her career at the East Towson Day Care Center (Head Start), where she lovingly taught and nurtured four- and five-year-olds. She later continued shaping young lives at The Chimes School, working with children with developmental disabilities, and also shared her gifts at St. Vincent's Center, Mays Chapel Children's Center, and the Hunt Valley YMCA. Her gentle spirit, patience, and unwavering dedication touched the lives of countless families.
In 2008, due to declining health, Katherine took an early retirement. During this time, she devoted herself to caring for her mother and strengthening the bonds she cherished with her family and friends. She found joy in family gatherings, holiday celebrations, and simple, meaningful conversations. Katherine loved being among her people—whether laughing, fellowshipping at Tuesday night community feedings, or spending quiet time with loved ones.
Her faith was central to her life. A devoted member of Mt. Calvary AME Church Katherine could often be found walking the aisles with her hands lifted, praising God with all the strength of her spirit. She served her church family faithfully—sometimes even acting as Mt. Calvary AME Church unofficial "security guard," keeping watch and receiving packages whenever needed. Helping others was her language of love, and she offered it freely and without hesitation.
Katherine will be remembered for her strength, determination, compassion, and authenticity. She was steady. She was joyful. She was faithful. Even in difficult moments, she reassured those around her with her familiar words, "I'm fine, everything is fine."
Above all else, Katherine cherished her family. She leaves to honor and carry forward her memory her devoted and only daughter, Kia Banks, and her beloved grandson, Amir Ari Banks, who were the pride and joy of her life.Sisters, Connie Oakley and Ernestine Cornish-Fuller; niece, Natarsha Banks; nephews, Jeffery Oakley, Lonnie Fuller, and Demetrius Whye; aunt, Ruth Johnson; special cousins, Eric "Boo-Boo" Anderson and Richard "Pinky" Simpson; and a host of extended family members and dear friends whose lives she touched deeply.
Katherine Ann Banks lived a life rooted in love, faith, and service. Though she will be dearly missed, her legacy will continue through the children she nurtured, the community she embraced, the faith she demonstrated, and the family she loved so completely.
May her memory be a blessing, and may her beautiful spirit continue to shine through all who knew and loved her.
