Obituary for Reverend Dr. Delores B. Dorsey
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
PSALM 91.1 (KJV)
On Sunday, February 8, 2026, quietly and peacefully at Sinai Hospital, God dispatched an angel to receive the soul of Reverend Dr. Delores B. Dorsey, returning her to His eternal care. A woman of unwavering faith, profound wisdom, and historic distinction, Dr. Dorsey lived a life anchored in service, scholarship, and spiritual purpose.
Reverend Dr. Dorsey's early spiritual growth began at Perkins Square Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend Ward D. Yerby. It was there that she accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized, setting the foundation for a lifetime of devotion to God's work.
Her spiritual walk was guided by her favorite scripture, Psalm 91:1: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
This verse shaped her faith, her ministry, and her steadfast trust in God's covering presence. Born and raised in Baltimore, she was a proud product of the Baltimore City Public School System and a graduate of Frederick Douglass Senior High School. She continued her academic journey at Coppin State College, earning her undergraduate degree, followed by a Master's degree from Morgan State University, with additional studies at Towson State University.
Her love for learning and the Word of God led her to the Baltimore School of the Bible, Arlington Baptist Church, and ultimately The Family Bible Institute College and Seminary, where she earned both her Master's (1993) and Doctorate (1995) in Theology and Ministry.
Dr. Dorsey devoted decades of her life to educating young children as a kindergarten teacher in the Baltimore City Public School System. Her retirement was celebrated throughout the community and highlighted in the Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper, a testament to her impact as a beloved educator.
On September 25, 1994, she made history as the first woman ordained to the Gospel Ministry at Wayland Baptist Church, breaking an 86-year tradition and ushering in a new era of inclusion and spiritual leadership. Her ordination, conducted under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Hoffman F. Brown II, remains a defining milestone in the church's 118 year history.
Following her ordination, she became a foundational member of the Wayland Clergy Council, contributing to the spiritual and administrative oversight of the congregation. Her ministry focused on pastoral care, spiritual counseling, and mentoring emerging women in ministry. She championed the integration of women into formal ecclesiastical leadership and worked tirelessly to strengthen community-based spiritual growth.
Dr. Dorsey was also active in professional and civic organizations, including Phi Delta Kappa (PDK), the International Honorary Organization for Women Educators, where she was honored for excellence and leadership. She was celebrated among Baltimore's "Remarkable Women," recognized for her dual legacy as a spiritual leader and career educator.
Her Own Words, Her Own Calling
When asked what inspired her to enter the ministry, Dr. Dorsey spoke of dreams, spiritual encounters, and a persistent divine prompting. She recalled hearing God say, "prepare yourself." Despite longstanding barriers for women in the pulpit, she pursued theological training in obedience to God's voice.
After completing her studies, she again heard the Lord say, "It is time to move." When she shared her calling with Reverend Dr. Hoffman Brown, he responded, "I was wondering when you were going to come."
Reflecting on her historic ordination, she described the experience as enriching and rewarding, guided always by her desire to do what was pleasing to God.
As a senior member of Wayland Baptist Church, she cherished the preached Word, the camaraderie among the saints, Bible study groups, youth ministry, church school, worship services, and the church's commitment to serving families through food, clothing, and community programs.
Her message to the youth and to all of us is simple yet profound: "Stay on the Glory train… You will find love, peace, joy, strength, wisdom, and forgiveness." She encourages us to love our neighbors, pursue education, and strive for excellence, reminding us that God desires our very best.
