Q: What will you never forget about Loren?
A: Mr. Miles wasn’t just my colleague, he was my Twin. He called me Queen, and somehow in those two words, he made me feel affirmed, respected, and seen. He joked that he was the evil twin and I was the good one, and that humor became part of how we connected. We were twins because we loved our students hard! This humor between us was light, playful, and full of love and this is exactly who he was. I will never forget when he texted me through work frustrations and gave me a private gift after I won Teacher of the Year. He was a true and honest friend to me, not pretending to be.
Working alongside Mr. Miles heavily impacted me. He had a way of reaching young people that can’t be taught in a textbook. He didn’t just teach math, he taught confidence, perseverance, and the quiet truth that you mattered simply because you were there. He taught students and adults that they were capable, even when they doubted themselves. He believed in us all loudly and consistently, and we rose to meet that belief.
I watched him show up every day with patience, humor, and heart. His classroom was a place where students felt safe to try, safe to fail, and safe to grow. I, a teacher who wasn’t heavily grounded in my teacher union contract at the time, felt safe to ask him questions. I learned so much from him. And that mattered, especially for the adults and youth who needed someone to see their potential and refuse to let them quit.
Mr. Miles made a lasting impact on me and on every life he touched. His influence will live on in the students he taught, the colleagues he inspired, and the joy he brought into our days. I will always carry gratitude for having walked this journey with him… even if just for a chapter.
Rest well, Twin. I can still hear you yelling “Queen” down the long Carver halls. Thank you for the laughter, the lessons, and the love. Your legacy will live on.
