18.25245043 BTC (approx CAD $1.6 million) was drained from my account on July 29th in the Coldcard wallet hack. My Bitcoin was in cold storage. My keys were stored on a Coldcard device that was kept in a safety deposit box and had never been connected to the internet. However, hackers discovered a vulnerability in the portion of the hardware wallet's code used to generate seed phrases. This allowed them to use AI to brute-force seed phrase guesses. I was at our cottage and only heard about the hack today.
"No way this affects me," I thought.
I logged into the Wasabi Wallet software to view my Bitcoin wallets.
Right away, I saw a series of red withdrawal transactions, and I knew.
Between 9:36 p.m. and 9:43 p.m. on July 29, every wallet I had had been emptied.
18.25245043 BTC was gone. That's just over CAD $1.6 million.
Perhaps the hardest part was that I did everything right.

Q: How did you meet Peggy?
A: Peggy and I were neighbors many years ago - we lived across the hall from one another. Coincidentally, our sons, Kevin & Anthony were in middle school at the time and rode the bus together. As a result, we'd become very friendly with one another. What I've always known about her, that no matter what was going on, she was such a warm, kind and loving mom, wife and friend. Always with a smile on her face... always a kind word for those around her. My heart goes out to all of her loved ones. Peggy finally got the wings she always wore anyway.

You may have been born first but you will always be the baby. When I take a journey through my life you are never far away. Childhood memories, teenage giggles, becoming strong women. I was so proud of you when I had the pleasure of first hearing you speak God's words. Its like you found your voice overnight. Once shy and afraid to stand out, you were commanding the room and my heart sang with joy. You were no longer hiding in the shadows but standing in confidence and joy. We never argued except over who was going to ride in the front seat! We always said I love you at the end of a conversation and we never lost the ability to laugh so hard we almost cried. I fear the hardness of a world without your smile and crazy laugh. The loud way you called me by my full name, and all the useless attempts to keep you from candy.
