July 2024, I met Gwen! She traveled to North Carolina to visit Mrs. Mabel and Miss Betty! It was a pleasure meeting Gwen and her friend Almenta! This was my first time meeting Gwen but I felt I had always known her! Sending heartfelt condolences to her family. May she rest in heavenly peace.

To Gwen’s family: Having read the notes from others and now adding my own, kind is clearly one of the adjectives which best describe Gwen. Gwen was my area supervisor in the 1990’s, not long after I became an IEP chairperson in Balto City Schools. At the time, I was a young teacher with a growing family, special education was under a consent decree in the courts, and there was a lot of pressure on all those who were involved. My school was under audit and I was struggling to maintain my focus on necessary tasks, while awaiting a possible breast cancer diagnosis. Gwen showed up at my school, took one look at me, gave me a big hug and said, “Debbie, go home to your family, hug them and let them hug you, and leave this to me.” To this day I don’t know how much time and effort she had to put forth to finish the audit preparation. She brushed me off whenever I asked. It remains one of the kindest and most compassionate actions ever bestowed upon me. This story is illustrative of who Gwen was, not just as a boss, but who she was at heart. Always the teacher, she taught me personally not just about teaching and caring for students, but most importantly, about how to treat people, and how and what to prioritize in life. I have tried my best to emulate her ways throughout my 30+ years in education, especially whenever I was called upon to supervise others myself. How fortunate I was to have had her as a mentor. God bless her and keep her forever, and may her family and friends be blessed by her memory and comforted in the knowledge of the difference she made in the lives of so many.

To the family of Gwen Brooks. I served with Gwen on the Usher Board at the Southern Baptist for many years. Gwen has always been a bright star and great person to talk with. My great memory of Gwen will be when she attended church in her bright yellow suit for Church Anniversary. Looking so pretty. I will miss seeing Gwen at Church and other events that we would attend together. Rest in peace Gwen. I will miss you forever.

Q: What was one of the qualities of Gwendolyn that you loved most?
A:
I found Gwen to be an unassuming, meek, and kind-hearted person. There was nothing arrogant in her dealing with people. She had a quiet way even when she may have disagreed in a situation. I knew Gwen from a distance when we both were Baltimore City principals and got to know her more closely when she became a member of the Administrators Book Club (ABC). I had the good fortune to have lunch with her in a group setting as members discussed book themes and she and I had some phone conversations whereby I got to know her better. Gwen's spirit was warm and kind. Rest in Peace Gwen.
