Obituary of Bernice Mae Johnson

Please share a memory of Bernice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bernice Mae (Stone) Johnson, born April 25, 1930, in Laurel, Maryland to the late Alice Prater and Walker Stone. She embarked on a remarkable journey, through life with grace and dignity. She enriched the lives of those she encountered, leaving an unforgettable mark of warmth and wisdom. On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at the age of 95, Bernice peacefully departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and love. Rooted in faith, Bernice's spiritual journey began at Ames United Methodist Church in the Sandtown Community of Baltimore City. Bernice attended Carver Vocational Technical High School and graduated in 1947, where she studied needle trades to become a seamstress. Because of these skills, her mother, Alice Stone quoted, "She had a gifted talent for sewing." Bernice created many suits, dresses, and crocheted beautiful baby blankets, clothes, and booties for family and friends. While still creating, Bernice held many jobs throughout her years but settled as a mail clerk at the Social Security Administration Headquarters in 1972, where she worked for 20 years before retiring in 1992. On November 19, 1950, Bernice married her "Huckbone," Enoch McDaniel Johnson. He was the man of her life. They were married for 59 years before his passing. Out of that union came two children, Deborah Ann and Enoch Jr. She loved traveling with "Big E." They went to Canada, Las Vegas, Alaska, on cruises, and many bus trips to go shopping and the casino. After her granddaughters arrived on the scene, she continued traveling with them and the in-laws on many family vacations and shared her memories with anyone who would listen. Bernice was a feisty one and had a strong spirit. You know not to cross her, or she would tell you what for. She was always blunt and to the point. She loved her family and spent time with them when she could. When she was ready the leave, she always said, "Never say Goodbye, always say "See Ya!" Bernice was preceded in death by her parents Alice and Walker Stone, her husband Enoch Sr., her daughter, Deborah (Johnson) Curtis, three sisters Dorothy, Elizabeth, and Betty, as well as four brothers, Walker Jr., Prater, Maurice, and Robert. She leaves behind a cherished legacy, including her beloved son, Enoch Jr., daughter-in-law Johnna Johnson, brother Alvin Stone (Doris Jenea), son-in-law, David Curtis, two granddaughters Elisha Commissioning (Kion), Jenee Johnson, grand pup Mango, and sister-in-law Geraldine Stone, and a host of family and friends.
