Carolyn Antoinette Smith was born November 5, 1950 to Florence Roane in Baltimore, Maryland. Carolyn married Willie Smith Sr and became the loving mother of two children: the late Willie Smith Jr and Marchetta McLean. She is the loving granny of Bren Wilson; Ciera, Simone, and Akil Smith; Noah Artis; and Isis, Aneef Jr, Maya and Amar McLean.
Carolyn spent her life loving and taking care of others. Her late brother Ronald (Rock) Roane spent much of his life under her loving protection. She had an open door and a heart full of love which she gave willingly to her niece/goddaughter Denise (Angel) Roane. Angel spent many summers with her extended family building and making memories together. Carolyn held closely to her family and cherished time spent with her late sister Sheila Rose and family. Carolyn spent many holidays and special occasions with her sister Doris, Patsy, Mendell and families. She loved her big brothers Gary, Louis, and Lawrence who served as her protector and guidance. She also held closely to Dorothy, Gladys, Helen, Charlotte, Richard Stewart, Florence Stewart, and in-laws: Rockey, John; Juanita, Janice, and Claudia.
Carolyn was the neighborhood mom who people came to for help. She was an amazing cook who often prepared meals for people in her neighborhood. Carolyn was a skilled seamstress making clothes for her family and selling outfits to loyal customers in her spare time. Her house was the place where people gathered, hung out, played games, and had meals. She held weekend family game nights to keep her family close.
Carolyn was multi-faceted. SHe was creative and smart. Carolyn gave the love of learning, sewing, and reading to her daughter. Carolyn was a speed reader who never forgot the contents of a book and could finish several novels over the span of a weekend. She taught her daughter to love books and they took frequent trips to the bookstore together to continue their passion. Carolyn loved old movies and shared that love with Marchetta, as they watched countless black & white classic movies, westerns, and musicals together. She taught her daughter to sew, and they made many things together, including her prom dresses. Among her things was a book she had written dedicated to her family and love.
She was funny and a great singer who often sang "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and "Summertime" while preparing for the day. Her voice was so strong it could be heard blocks away calling her daughter home. She danced the "Charleston" in the living room and brought joy to all around her.
We cherish the memories she left us. Carolyn will be deeply missed.
