My husband and I always enjoyed John's company at the Chambersburg , PA annual Civil War seminar. During the afternoon break we would often go into town together and look in the various book and antique stores. He often brought items for the seminar auction and even gave some as gifts to his friends attending the seminar. John enjoyed growing orchids and shared some valuable insights into raising them successfully. We like to think of him as a truly renaissance man.

Although I did not know John Pumphrey personally, I have had the privilege of working with his granddaughter, Kayla, for several years. Through her, I’ve witnessed qualities that surely reflect his legacy—her love for the Lord, honesty, integrity, reliability, and determination. She also carries a deep desire and compassion to care for the elderly, which speaks volumes about the values instilled in her.
From the photos shared, it is evident that he was a handsome man who carried himself with distinction. If these traits she possess were shaped by his influence, then he was truly an exemplary man whose life and character continue to shine through his family.
While his passing brings sorrow, it also gives reason to celebrate a life well lived and a legacy that continues to bless others. May his memory bring comfort, and may his influence be forever cherished in the lives he touched, both directly and indirectly through generations to come.

Attended many Civil war seminars that John also attended. He was always a joy to talk to and fellowship with. Over recent years I had many phone conversations with John and his first words were always how are you doing. I will always have fond memories of John. He was a blessing to know.

I first got to know John at my first Chambersburg Civil War Seminar and Tour in 2000. He was always friendly and kind to me and everyone. He always brought many artifacts and items for the auction. I bought many over the years and they are on display in my home. Probably the last one I acquired and the most notable is a replica table of one shown on portraits of the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse in the McClain house. John would call me at times after he was no longer about to attend seminars and I talked with him several times after he had gone to a nursing home.
