Mattie McGowan, 89, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and confidant passed away on June 14, 2025. She was born on March 27, 1936, in Baltimore, MD to the late Lula and James William McGowan. Mattie attended Baltimore City Public Schools and went on to have a distinguished 32-year career at the Baltimore City Department of Social Services. Mattie was an avid music lover and enjoyed swaying and listening to her favorite songs. Mattie was a lover of all things family. She enjoyed spending time with her immediate and extended family. She often bragged about her family's closeness and comeliness and looked forward to their weekly gatherings. Mattie loved the Lord as written, with all of her heart, soul, and mind. She attended Mount Pleasant Church and Ministries where she was a faithful member and servant. She was a prayer warrior and never missed an opportunity to pray for her family and friends. Mattie was a pillar of strength, light and hope to everyone she came in contact with. She will be truly remembered and missed by all those who loved her. Mattie is survived by her daughter Shirley Bennett (Nathaniel); son Anthony McGowan (Diane); grandchildren Michelle, Cheryl, Joseph (Kenya), Reginald (Chanona), Dante (Yolanda), Keyon, Marcus, Edwin, Nicole, Nickoles and Kaila; all 20 of her great grandchildren, great great grandson Justin; sister Lillian Wilson; nieces, nephews , cousins, oldest friends and best friends; friends and neighbors who became family and her cherished church family. A celebration of Mattie's life will be held on July 3, 2025, at Mount Pleasant Church and Ministries in Baltimore, MD.
