Obituary of Earl Slyvester Matthews

Born on March 4th 1926, Earl Sylvester Matthews was the fifth child, of eleven children born to his parents Mary Ella Matthews and Sammuel L. Matthews. At a very young age, Earl embraced the noble character traits of leadership and responsibility. Throughout his life, he demonstrated excellence in handing his own affairs and the affairs of others. Earl graduated from Douglass High School in June of 1944, and joined the US Army that same year. His military career encompassed both WWII and the Korean War. He travelled many distant lands while climbing the military ranks, ending his career with the rank of Captain. Earl earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree from Morgan State College. While in college he pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. In April 1952, He married the love of his life, Lucy Anne Collins. Earl and Anne had no children, yet their home overflowed with love and activity from the young and old alike. He opened his home to his mother first and foremost, as well as siblings, nieces, and nephews; whether for the short term or longer even more permanent stays. In March, 1981, Earl completed a 31-year career with the US Post Office where he rose to the executive division as an assistant to US Postmaster Warren M. Bloomberg. Earl is proceeded in death by his parents, Mary Ella Matthews, and Sammuel L. Matthews; wife, Lucy Anne Matthews; brothers: James, Wilbert, Sammuel, and Raymond Matthews; and sisters: Doris Matthews Gray and Bernice Matthews Thomas. Earl will be remembered as a loving and loyal husband, brother, uncle and friend. He leaves to cherish his memory, his remaining siblings Gladys Matthews Brockington, Shirley Matthews Dillard, Melvin Matthews, and Patricia Matthews Julian, along with their families. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the memories we all hold dear.
