Please share a memory of Irvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Irvin Lloyd Young, Sr., devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025.
He was born on January 18, 1930 to Helen (Young) Lewis and Aubrey Williams. He lived with his mother and sister, Shirley Waddell, in a close-knit community in Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Young loved to work as he saw it as a way to escape poverty. At the age of seven, he began his first job selling newspapers and working in a barber shop in order to help supplement his mother's income. Since then, he has worked hard to provide for those he loved. At the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Navy where he met his wife, Darlene. They were married on June 7, 1952 and resided in Baltimore. Mr. Young often worked two jobs in order to provide for his growing family. He worked for Sealtest Milk Co., Bethlehem Steel, was a cab driver, worked for the family produce market, and later worked for Amoco Oil Co.
Mr. Young, wanting to provide more opportunities for his children, bravely left the community that he had known and moved his family to West Friendship in Howard County, Maryland where they bought a 15-acre homestead in 1959. With the Lord leading them and by their unwavering determination and hard work, they built a home on their property and raised their children there. Mr. Young did everything with excellence and loved to landscape his property, making it beautiful not just for his family, but also for the many friends he loved like family to gather for weekly post-church Sunday dinners, weddings, and summer church picnics. Mr. and Mrs. Young's doors were always open and they were quick to generously and sacrificially help anyone in need.
Irvin became a Christian at the age of 12 and has faithfully followed the Lord ever since. His Bible was always near his place at the breakfast table as he read and meditated on it every day. He instilled in his children a love for the Lord and would continually give God glory for all that the Lord had done in his life.
Mr. Young was a consummate gentleman. Whether he was going to work or simply doing yardwork, he could always be found wearing his signature navy blue pants, white, crisply ironed shirt, and a perfectly knotted, blue tie. His smile was infectious and his considerate, outgoing personality made everyone who met him feel seen, loved, and valued.
Mr. Young had three great loves - the Lord, his wife of almost 73 years, Darlene, and his family. He often said that his greatest accomplishment was raising a good family. And what an accomplishment that was! Irvin Young, Sr. was predeceased in death by (and now reunited in Heaven with) his youngest daughter, Leila Young. He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Darlene Young, six children, Irvin Young, Jr. (Linda), David Young (Junko), Aaron Young, Linda Heigh (Michael Sr.), Michele Cottman (Wayne), and Philip Weatherford (Demetrius), 26 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
