Obituary of Mary L. Gibbs
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It's with heavy hearts, we celebrate the beautiful life of Mary Louise Gibbs, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, who entered eternal rest in Hanover Maryland on February 16, 2025.
Born in Bamberg, South Carolina, to Ruth and Willie, Mary later moved to Connecticut, where she completed her education in New Haven. It was there, in middle school, that she met the love of her life, Charles Gibbs. Their love story flourished, and they married in 1962, beginning a journey that spanned decades and continents.
As a dedicated Air Force wife, Mary embraced the adventure of military life, living in New Mexico, Germany, Georgia, and Maryland. Along the way, she built lifelong friendships and worked as a Fashion Fair consultant in the post exchange, always exuding grace, style, and warmth.
Her passion for caring for others led her to a fulfilling career in geriatric nursing in the DMV area, where her kindness and dedication left a lasting impact. As a nurse, she exemplified excellence, caring, compassion, and a commitment to serving others. She formed deep bonds with colleagues and patients alike, and friendships that stood the test of time.
Mary loved capturing every family moment through her love of pictures and videotaping. Capturing every moment, and every event she ensured a life full of memories. She took pride in serving as a Nurse at her Freedom Way Missionary Baptist church while serving in her crisp white dress on Sunday mornings.
Above all, Mary was the heart and matriarch of her family. With unwavering love, she nurtured not only her children but also stepped in as a mother, grandmother, and "Auntie" to many. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting presence of her love.
Mary is preceded in death by her mother Tieriester Googe, sister Marilyn Googe, brother Freddy Googe as well as precious cousins, Pinky, Pat, and Benny. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Charles Gibbs Sr., and beloved children: Charles Gibbs Jr. (m. Stacy Gibbs), Kimberly Dillard, Charles Gibbs III, and special daughter in love Tanya Bates, (m. Sean Bates). She was a cherished grandmother to Dejuan, Ciara, Aleana, and Amilya (Gibbs); Ebony, Carmen, and Taylor (Bates); Saj', Bryce, and Brylin (Dillard); and special grandsons Daquan, Jordan, Terrence, and Josiah—all of whom she loved deeply. She also leaves behind siblings: Delores, Gloria, Hollis, Larry, and a host of family and friends.
Her legacy of love, strength, and compassion will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She was a guiding light, a source of wisdom, and a pillar of strength for her family and community. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit remains in every life she touched. Rest in love, you will be missed beyond words but remembered ALWAYS.
