Obituary of Rebecca Anne Mears
Rebecca Mears (January 17, 1940 – January 19, 2025)
Philadelphia, PA – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rebecca Mears, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, who left us on January 19, 2025, just two days after celebrating her 85th birthday. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 17, 1940, Rebecca's life was defined by love, faith, and a fierce dedication to her family and community.
Rebecca attended school in Philadelphia before marrying James T. Mears Sr., with whom she shared four children: Denise, James, Michael, and Robert (who preceded her in death). She leaves behind her three surviving children, along with six grandchildren—Latrice, Jasmyn, Matthew, Cameron, Sheena, and Maurice Jr.—and a growing number of great-grandchildren who were a constant source of joy and pride.
Rebecca moved to Baltimore later in life, where she worked both in the kitchen and as a correctional officer for many years. She retired at the age of 50 after an impactful and respected career in corrections. Despite her busy professional life, Rebecca never let her family take second place. She cherished every moment spent at family gatherings, particularly those in her backyard, where laughter and love flowed freely. She was a patient listener and a caring presence for her grandchildren, always offering advice or simply being there to hear them out.
A devoted member of her church, Rebecca loved traveling with her congregation and exploring new places with those she cared about. Her culinary skills, especially her legendary fried chicken, were a highlight of many family gatherings. She also enjoyed watching football, always cheering on her favorite team, the Baltimore Ravens.
Rebecca had a special bond with her longtime friend, Jean Harrell, with whom she shared more than 40 years of friendship. She was also deeply involved in her community, volunteering at her grandchildren's middle school and helping to collect items for a local donation pantry.
Rebecca's warm heart, unyielding faith, and devotion to her family will be deeply missed. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who carry on her legacy of love and kindness.
