Casket vs. Coffin Differences: 7 Key Distinctions You Need to Know

Knowing the basics of casket vs. coffin differences is a helpful step in making informed funeral choices.

When planning a funeral, every detail matters—and that includes choosing the right burial container. While ‘coffin’ and ‘casket’ are often used interchangeably, they are actually two different options, each with its own unique design and feel.

At Vaughn Greene Funeral Services, we understand how emotional and overwhelming funeral planning can be. We strive to make things easier by explaining your options with clarity and compassion. Below, we have outlined seven key casket vs. coffin differences, so you can decide what’s best for your loved one.

1.     Shape

It may seem like a minor detail, but the shape can make a difference in the overall presentation of the burial container.

  • Caskets are rectangular with four straight sides, giving them a more modern and uniform look.
  • Coffins have six sides and are shaped to fit the human body—narrow at the feet and head, wider at the shoulders.

2. Lid style

This distinction may be important if your family plans to have a viewing before the service.

  • Caskets usually have hinged lids, sometimes in two sections, so only the top half opens for viewings.
  • Coffins have flat lids that lift off completely and aren’t attached with hinges.

3.     Emotional impact

Words matter, especially during challenging, grief-filled times.

  • In the U.S., “casket” is the term most often used today. It sounds more familiar and comforting.
  • The word “coffin” can feel older or a little harsh, sometimes bringing to mind horror movies or scary images.

When it comes to burial containers, there is no right or wrong choice—it’s about what feels right for you and your family.

4. Availability

  • Because caskets are much more common in funeral homes across the U.S., there are more styles, materials, and colors to choose from.
  • Coffins aren’t stocked as often and may need to be specially ordered, which can limit your choices but still provide a meaningful, traditional look.

If you prefer a coffin, your funeral director can help you explore your options.

5. How they’re carried

The exteriors of caskets and coffins are designed a bit differently, which can affect how they are transported.

  • Caskets usually have long handles along the sides, known as rails, making them easier for pallbearers to lift.
  • Coffins generally do not have rails and sometimes need extra equipment or help to carry them safely.

It’s important to keep this in mind if your service includes pallbearers or a procession.

6. Interior details

Inside the container, you’ll also notice some differences.

  • Caskets often have padded, lined interiors with fabric that can be customized for comfort and appearance.
  • Coffins tend to have simpler linings. They are still respectful, just less elaborate.

If these finishing touches matter to you, it’s worth considering when making your choice.

7.     Personal preference

Sometimes, the decision comes down to what feels most appropriate and meaningful.

  • A coffin might seem more personal or traditional, especially for families who value history or simplicity.
  • A casket may feel like a formal, sophisticated, or fitting choice for those who prefer a more polished look.

Whichever type of container you select, what matters most is that it feels like a fitting tribute to your loved one.
